Anyone tried the new G-Tech Pro COMPITITION?

Seems G-Tech have a new product called the G-Tech Pro COMPETITION. Has anyone given it a try? it's $100 more than the old version but has some pretty slick features. It works the same way as the old version in that there are no wires aside from the 12v power wire to the cigarette socket. It has a shift light and full LCD screen and you can now download your data to your computer. Check it out at G-Tech Here's a picture too.

Great, let me know what you think of it. It seems pretty slick. I might pick one up if it's as good as it sounds.

Thumbs up G-Tech Competition review....

My first thoughts regarding the G-Tech competition is........WOW very cool smaller then I thought but it works.
Now to my first gripe the bracket suuucks big time, why is it so hard to make such a simple device work properly this
thing falls of the windsheild over and over agin..HEEEELP.
My valentine one never ever fell of (Hint Tesla).
My secon gripe...I can't read the display with polarized
sunglases except if I tilt my head 90degrees.
My third The shift lights are staged so 1,2,or four LED's
commes on depending on the rpm, the problem is you can't tell in the heat of action if 1,2 or 4 LED's are lit? why not use amber for 1,green for 2 and then red for the last 2
LED's.Every other sequential shift light uses this combination..
Now to the good stuff(and there is a lot)The user interface
is easy to use, setup relatively painfree thank god.
Today was a wet and fairly cold day so traction was hard to find a poor 7.3second but the mind blower was
177hp at the wheels and 199ftlbs of torque the only uppgrade on my steed is a supertrapp muffler.
when the run is done you can access the memory and show
shift points/rpm,hp,torque 60'time 1/4mile etc..
Now this review of the G-tech unit is only my opinion
and I only had it for a very short time but even with the small problems that I did encountered In can highly recomend
this unit

what did you put in for vehicle weight? I used 2300 lbs, assuming two occupants, when I can I will weight the car though. the calculation for HP is proportional to weight, so the percentage error for both will be the same.

i was only able to do a couple of 0-60 runs and the thing does work; my biggest problem was finding a spot in NYC where it was safe, smooth (that's a joke!, actually both are a joke!) i simply haven't gotten the time to take it out of town yet. I also need a bit of time with the G-tech to make sure I am using it right, but it is definitely very cool. I had no problem with the bracket, but you have to make sure you turn the threaded ring properly to increase suction. That part I got right.

Just visitied the G-Tech web site - what a cool toy!! This is now in a "must have" list

A couple of questions - how detailed is the hp/torque graph? How long does it keep its data? Can the unit be brought inside to make notes from its data or does it get lost when you remove it from the car?

jlm: The weight you used is low. miniusa lists the Cooper as 2524lbs and the S as 2678. These are unladen so the gas in the tank and the weight of the driver has to be added. You could be off by as much as 700lbs. The good news is you have more hp at the wheels than you thought!

i used 2660 and assumed that was including 4 occupants at 180lbs each; i had only two, hence the 2300 lb result.

Keith, according to the website for G-Tech the unit can be connected to your PC and your details downloaded. I assume from here you can import it into Excel and make all sorts of pretty graphs.

Buggy suction cup...:(

Hi John...
Glad you like your G-Tech unit but bracket thing is bugging the s#$@t out of me, I tried every conceivable possition
on the windshield and I did use the screw that cranks down
the suction cup it will not stay up.I compared the material on the Valentine and the G-Tech and the Valentines, and the suctioncup on the Valentine is soft and pliable and the cup on the G-tech is much harder....WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!

Boy, it figures that G-Tech would finally come out with their new model, right afterI bought my Race Technology AP-22. No matter, I still like my AP-22, even if it's not as purty as the new G-Tech.

It's odd how mn_angrybeats is getting overly optimistic torque and HP estimates, even though he had seriously underestimated his car's weight. It appears that the unit is measuring the 0-60 time more-or-less correctly, so that's not the problem. (That's so cool that with 3-axes of measurement, you don't have to enter any values on how much the vehicle "squats" under acceleration. It can measure that directly.) The only other reason I can think of for the crazy torque results is that the unit is over-estimating the wind resistance at speed. If the unit thinks the car is experiancing a lot of drag, it will report a higher torque estimate at any given acceleration.

That's odd. I'm checking the online documentation and I don't see any mention at all about either air resistance or rolling resistance. Hopefully, the manual-writers just forgot to include that chapter in the 'pre-release' documentation, since it's pretty much impossible for an accelerometer to calculate HP without knowing both the rolling resistance and drag coefficient of the vehicle in question.

Here's a handy calculator to use to determine these values. (Once you figure out how to enter them!)

While it wont get me a perfect center position (which should only really matter for lateral g's), I've found the best place in the MINI to mount the G-tech is on the dash--just to the lower left of the speedometer. I found that when up on the windshied, the cord stretches too much and it never stays up. I'm really dissappointed to hear that the gen. 2 G-Tech isn't any better. I was hopeful after reading the new info.
