Odd Ticking Noise On Acceleration

My Mini has been off the road for 5 weeks as it failed its MOT due to needing two new rear tyres.
Had these changed (after I saved up the moeny ) and took the car in for another MOT.
Car passed ok.
Thing is, I've noticed an odd ticking sound when the throttle is pressed. A bit like the old VW Beetle and Campervan engine sound but not as loud.

Now does my engine need tuning as it's been off the road and unused for 5 weeks?

Hope you can help.

Thanks

You sure its the gearbox ? Is yours an S or a one/cooper ? Not heard of the gearbox going on an S....

Ticking on the 1st gen can be worn wheel bearings, timing chain tensioner, hydraulic lifters.... there are a few possibilities... check the oil is topped up too

Running 211whp

Agreed! I'd have another mechanic look at it before you spend any money!

Is your mini a standard shift or an automatic?

If it is a standard shift it could be your throw out bearing. I had one go bad on my in a toyota before and the symptom is an initial quiet ticking on acceleration and eventually the clutch completely goes out and you can no longer disengage to change gears.

Just my two cents. But at least it is something else you can mention to the mechanic.

Good luck!

Are you sure its the gearbox? Can you hear the noise when you are stationary, with the clutch depressed?
If yes, then it wont be the gearbox...

My 03 MCS has a ticking noise when I accelerate hard, and has been doing so for years. It is generally only noticeable when driving along narrow lanes with walls either side, and I have the window open.
Earlier threads suggest that it was the harmonic damper fitted alongside the engine that was causing the problem.
All I can say is, I've now driven nearly 203,000 miles and the ticking hasn't caused any other problems.

Im not sure it could be the wheel bearings as the noise is coming from up front and my timing chain has been checked recently and was fine, and i check my oil every week when washign and polishing

Mine does the same its an r53. Not under acceleration though, just while cruising. Sounds like a metalic ticking noise as if a stone is caught in the tyre tread and tapping on the ground. Very quite, you need the windows down to hear.

I have topped up the oil and the noise has ceased a little bit. It is hardly noticeable now so maybe it was just an oil thing.
I had the car sorted earlier in the year as one of the coil springs broke and I had to have the whole cylinder-head cleaned and skimmed as well as a whole new set of coils put in. They then put on a new timing chain as that was out too.
I had the car serviced as well as putting new brake pads and disks at the front.

All in all the whole cost was about £1300!

So I'll be surprised if it's an engine thing.

Nice to know that there is help in the forum so replies appreciated.
