Noise from alternator belt?

Hi guys,

If I am correct then on the mini one at the left hand side of the engine close to the front bumper is the alternator belt? Well this belt was replaced in December, just this morning I noticed a slight squeaky noise from the engine, I took some white grease and gently sprayed inside the first top part that the belt goes round, now I assume this will have some sort of bearings? Well once sprayed the noise instantly went away but slowly came back although not as loud, do I just need to let the grease set? Has anyone else had this? Any help would be appreciated

i always thought getting grease on you belt was a really bad thing as it will allow the belt to slip. i would suggest replacing the belt and not spray any grease on it

Its normally because the pulleys arent exactly in alignment that causes belt noise, and its normally Vee belts that do it.
If a new alternator has been fitted or the cars been stripped for work you should check when re installing its pulley is aligned with the others by placing a straight edge or similar across the flat faces.
You dont want to be putting grease on the belts, it will slip and the alternator might give reduced charge so you end up one morning with a flat battery.
If that seems all ok you can also stop it by scuffing up the the vee belt running surface in the pulley with some emery cloth to remove the shine and then fit a new belt.
