You will pay the same insurance for an S the minute you install that engine , you actually could end up paying more as its classed as a modified vehicle , i would seriously check with your insurance company first. I was going to add a non standard air filter but the cost was just insane! they classed it as an engine modification , it was going to cost me more than it would to be insured for an S just because of an air filter!

Buy an S and make it look like a one! that makes much more sense

Surely no one with any "sense of responsibilty" would put an S engine in a ONE and not tell the insurance company
But youre right, I used to work for an insurance company and this would certainly end up costing you more to insure than a bog standard S and we would insist also on engineers reports etc, thats an extra cost to bear in mind, its not just the engine, its everything else that has to be up to the job too.
Wouldnt have thought it was worth all the hassle, its not as though S's are in short supply.

These kind of conversions tend to be done by 'older' enthusiasts who enjoy the challenge of building their own unique MINI from parts and can then get a reasonable insurance quote at the end. The high labour costs also mean it is usually only done by experienced DIY home mechanic enthusiasts to be economically viable.

Such engine conversions are of course very common in the classic Mini world as a genuine early Mini Cooper S is now a very rare and expensive classic car...........but as said the modern R53 MINI Cooper S are fairly cheaply and widely available at present, so it makes less sense to do. This may change in future years as the usual attrition rate of performance cars makes the R53 Cooper S a much rarer 'future classic' and harder to find in good condition at a reasonable price.

Totally understand what mab01uk is saying , my partners father had classic mini's and the stories he will tell you about modding that little car is amazing and you can tell it was a true passion for him , i don't know personally but he said they were great cars to work on, i just don't see the point on what still is a modern car but then i do NOT have the skills to carry out such a task myself and maybe the OP does and wants a challenge , its just a shame that maybe the only thing that would hold you back is an insurance company but then they are there for a reason and only doing their job i suppose.

If you decide to go ahead then best of luck Some before and after pics would be amazing
