Dave.F or Alta Cold Air Intake??

Hey Guys,

I need a little advice if possible! I have just bought a 04 Cooper s. I’m now about to start some engine mods! I have a scorpion exhaust on it already and now plan to add a coi, pulley then a remap. I have been reading up on intakes and one that comes up time and time again is a Dave.F. Now I was originally going to go for an Alta coi just because it seems the safer option, the Alta is quite a lot more expensive but this isn’t a massive issue at the moment. Baring in mind this may become quite a heavily modified car is expensive better? Or is Dave.F truly the way forward?

......Or does it really not matter??

Thank you!

First mod should be a supercharger reduction pulley because it offers the "best bang for the buck".

You don't really need a remap with a 15% reduction pulley.

Why do you think the Alta intake is the "safer" of the two intake options?

Thank you for your reply!

Would a reduction pulley massively affect my MPG? I’m struggling to keep it above 30MPG at the min. If so would I be able to counteract that with a remap?

And basically I’m completely new to all this (as you can probably tell) so I feel like id rather buy an intake of a company like Alta than what looks like a guy called Dave making intakes in his shed :/

From what I've read in these forums the Dave F is the best as a lot of the others suffer from hear soak.

As said before though. Best bang for buck is a 15% pulley first

I've had both on my car & now run with an Alta, the reason I changed from the Dave F was only because the Alta enhances the supercharger whine more & I managed to pick up one for sale on here for a bargain price.

The Dave F will give you a guaranteed few more bhp & is a very well put together CAI,

Last dyno run I did was at Lohen in October, my car ran a best ever 228bhp, mods on my pre facelift R53 are:

Hartge re-map/15% pulley/Alta CAI/Milltek manifold/Hayward & Scott exhaust/GRS tmic

If you are worried about mpg then a tuned R53 probably isn't the car for you

You could always go OEM and fit a JCW airbox

What effects MPG is a heavy foot

If you're concerned about MPG you might not want to start down this path

Been reading up on the net and its kind of worried me about getting an air filter now. So many people are saying they are bad for your engine as they as let too many large particles in. Also they are a pain to maintain and get the cone correctly oiled etc. Most are saying stick to paper filters... Can anyone here give me some advice. This has scared me off abit. Thanks
