2006 Cooper: RPM to Gear Ratio

I just bought a 2006 Mini Cooper automatic transmission with 64k kms.

Maybe I just haven't gotten used to the shift patterns yet but it seems to hold on to high rpms too long.

I can't really feel when the gears shift but on the highway it stays around 4k rpm until about 105 km/h, then it shifts and drops down to 3k rpm or so. This could be problematic as 100 km/h (already 10 over the speed limit) is usually what I drive at - meaning I'm going to be burning gas. I just went through my first tank and got about 11.5 kms/ltr.

Plus, at around 110 km/h (3.5k rpm) if I take my foot off the gas, the rpms jump up to around 4k rpms before starting back down.

Are both of these normal? Thanks.
