Filter Shootout

I played with some filters I have and my OBD II data logger today at lunch. I ran the car at WOT from 2000 RPM up to redline in second gear, on the same road, in the same direction, from the same starting point.

The filters were:
Stock Paper
2 stage Foam POD filter 2.5" x 6"
K&N Oval 4.25" x 7"

The filters were attached to the stock rubber intake tube via a short length of 2.5" exhaust pipe and a hose clamp. No heatshield was used in this test. I will post a heatshield version later next week, weather permitting.

the K&N is kicking foam butt by the end. The white is the oiled foam and the pink is the oiled cotton. The foam filter is flowing just as good as the K&N (even better in some ranges) but it simply runs out of area at the higher RPMS. The foam filter is undersized. When I bought it, i was trying to minimize the size of the filter so I could fit it in tighter spots but when I did my cylinder filling calcultions, i forgot about that pesky supercharger... this foam filter is ideal for a regular Coooper. The K&N is easily twice the size of the foam.

Isnt that 3k dip strange? I notice Andy @ Rosstech gets it too. Anyone else?

I'm logging with Pocketlogger and graphing in Microsoft Excel.

it would be interesting if the dip moves to the left with the 15% pulley compared to the stock or just disappears. it might be some sort of air velocity/efficiency function of the blower. A chamber resonance, maybe?

Obe,
Post a few closeups of the filter and I'll investigate. I've got a lot of filters and I've got a hunch I know which one it is

Andy sent me some data and I graphed it on similar axis... i had to go a little higher for his boost, but i guess thats the point.

I have a lot of data, Im not sure how useful it all is. I also logged intake air temp to see if a heat shield really effects the intake temp, and it does. The graph is kinda ugly though... the logger only measure 1 degree increments so it looks like a staircase. I'm not sure that this is the best possible data but its a starting point.

If anyone is interested in having a particular filter or intake system tested, send it on over and I'll put it to the test.

If you have a standard Cooper and want to try out some of my filters (and you're in central NJ), let me know.

I wouldnt try to make too much sense out of this... I'm not sure it makes any at all. It was interesting that the foam has the smallest temperature differential but I dont know why or how.

NOTE: not shown are the actual temps, only a differential from the start. The actual temps, lowest to highest, went: stock, foam, K&N. This is also the order they were tested in. I would have done the stock again at the end, but my lunch hour is only so long!

Pardon my stupid question, but how do you get to the air filter on the MINI Cooper (not "S")? It doesn't even seem to be mentioned in the owner's manual. I'm looking to put in a K&N, but the whole filter cover assembly looks like it's bolted on...

Thanks, Harry

Harry,

Thanks. Gee, it looks like taking off the bolts will take the entire assembly off, rather than just opening the top. Oh, for the days of wing nuts or clips.
