They CAN be closed

I know because when I took delivery, I had them pull out the filter to show me that it wasn't kinked on the sides like a friend's was. They sent out their apprentice that looked like a 6th grader with 2 flatheads and a pair of needlenose....."hmmmm" I thought, "this should prove interesting..." Sure enough, it does pop pretty easily. Getting it back together is a bit of a chore as said apprentice proved by trying to push it back together with the 2 screwdrivers. When I saw him pull that move, I quickly took over the situation. I'm sure there is a better way but this is how I got it to go back together:
grabbed the hook end with the needlenose and carefully pushed the bump end with a screwdriver. Once the hook was in the right place, I had the 6th grader flip the hook up with the other screwdriver and it clipped together. It is pretty easy but does take a lot of force to get that hook in the right place. I would be more interested to know if there is a special tool for these band clamps available somewhere....anyone know?

Go to your local hardware or plumbing store. They'll have some adjustable ones you can tighten and loosen again and again. Just make sure you buy one big enough!

You usually can't just pick them or the clamps at your local parts store.

the other style is called a Jubilee Clip and you can get them in stainless steel.

if all this is because you are worried that you will have warrenty problems because you have the wrong type of clip I wouldn't

Use a large pair of plyers to squeeze the clamp back together. It pops right into place. To remove, insert large flat blade screwdriver and twist. Either process takes one second.
