July 15 - 17 Randy in Bay Area (CA) for Pulley Install!!!

I just spoke with Randy at MINI COOPER Motorsport in Denver, CO. He confirmed that he is willing to visit Northern California, under two conditions:

1. October time-frame (original plan, read-on)

2. 10+ MCS's

Given his schedule for this summer, it would need to be October, at the earliest. Personally, I'm really cool with that as it allows for the ECU stuff to evolve further (go Andy, et al), and maybe prices to drop. Randy can also provide the ECU update when visiting, for those interested in his solution (right now the "best" out there!)...

And like with other locales he is hitting, he does require 10 of us to make the venture worthwhile for him. A recent thread revealed that the Bay Area does indeed have strong interest (a 1/4 of the respondents) in welcoming Randy to perform this desirable modification:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=30055

While I realize that we might lose some of those who don't want to wait that long, I hope not many. I'm sure we will add more also due to the increase of the MCS population in the coming months...

For those who don't know, the price is 400 bucks for the pulley, and it's professional installation. I think it is also very cool in that you can watch, and even partake, to some degree, in this experience.

Please, if this interests you, post here. And, if you are highly commited, also send me a PM.

Persistency pays off!

Just give me a call to get on the list. I will be in Florida until May 20th, but you can reach me after that.

The pulley is your choice - two piece aluminum and steel interference fit or the new two-piece stainless steel taper bore pulley.

The price including the pulley and the installation is as Tony stated - $400.

The software upgrade will be available for the special price too - $699 (I wish I could get it lower). This is totally optional.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good question.

There are two basic types of pulleys - like I stated above. Here are the pros and cons of each:

New taper bore design

Pros:
No heat required for the installation on the supercharger
Capped end prevents installation problems with belt alignment
All stainless steel

Cons:
Heavier than the other style

Interference fit design

Pros:
Lighter weight
Interchangable sizes available (but why you would really need this is up for debate)

Cons:
Heat is required to get the new hub on the shaft - so care has to be taken to cool the hub ASAP to prevent damage to the shaft seal
Alignment is a one shot deal, and there is no stop to prevent the hub from going on too far or not far enough

Testing has been done on both units to determine the torque required to spin on the shaft, and the taper bore actually has a higher torque rating, but both are well above anywhere close to the load on the pulley - the belt would slip way before the pulley would on the shaft.

Interference fit is used in several other applications - including the stock set-up - without slip issues. I would be concerned about the orginal interference pulley that used to be available (no longer on the market) that is all aluminum. This has to do with the different thermal expansion rates of steel and aluminum and may cause issues over time. The new designs all use steel hubs.

Taper bores are used on numerous industrial applications where direct torque loads are carried at sustained RPMs - much more grueling than the application we have in our Eaton M45s.

I think what I'm saying is, they are both good products - I'd be happy to help you make the right decision based on what your needs are.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

PS - It may be hard to get a hold of me this weekend, as we are doing the first "pulley party" in Florida. I will be back to answer any questions on Tuesday evening. If anyone is in the Florida area, feel free to stop by the shop and watch the process. We will be at Renntech in Lake Park (I think the web site has directions - www.renntechmercedes.com )on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. We are doing six cars each day.

I guess Randy is in FLA at the time making quite a few MCS's faster, but I do have a question on his commentary above...

He brought-up the issue of weight. That is something I've never heard mentioned b4 in context to this smaller supercharger pulley mod. On rotating masses such as wheels/tires, this is signficant, and well-discussed.

Well, this is a rotating mass also, not just "dead" weight. Being lighter, not at the expense of integrity, I would think this is desirable - easier or quicker to spin, more responsive. Yes..no? Maybe a lighter interference fit one generates a tad more power down low, or even throughout the range?

I've seen dynos comparing exhaust and intakes, but maybe it might be interesting to do the same for the 15% pulley to see if weight is a factor worthy of consideration...

Guys,

I almost forgot about this thread, but after just hearing from Randy, I thought I would revive it to see if we can get 10+ folks to commit. Randy shared that Cincinnati has got 20 or so MCS's lined-up! Wow. We should be able to get half of that pretty easily, right?

This would also be a fun and festive activity, even with some door prizes . Heck, I'll even fry a turkey It will be football season, and we can have some games on the tube. Actually, I have a friend who should be the punter for the Niners next year. He comes home in a few hours from NFL Europe. His last game: 6 punts, 47 yard average, 56 long and one inside the 20 Sorry, I digress...

I'm contemplating doing the install myself in a few weeks, but I'd rather wait and have Randy do it in the Fall...

Please chime-in and let me/us know!

Thanks.

I'm still interested...

And if I still have a job come Fall, I'll probably want the ECU reprogramming too. Does Randy have a program optimized for pully + intake? That's all I'm really looking to do at this point.

Guys, I'm working this hard... and Randy is really trying also. As many of you know, Randy will be down in SoCal the weekend of July 10th for a few days.

I have learned that many folks want the pulley upgrade here also - via a poll and plenty of PM's! However, many of you, heck, including myself are not very keen on waiting until Fall for this to happen. Yet, we still have 5 folks; several on the Regional forum who have not voiced themselves here...

Well, Randy is open to the idea about coming here after his San Diego stint. He would be flying there, and then to here, if we can swing this. I say "we" because we first need sufficient people, as we have known all along. I feel fairly confident that we can do that though. But, there are few other factors for which I can use some help...

I will gladly get Randy at the airport on 7/15 (his b-day btw). He has requested a garage in which to work his magic as he will be somewhat tired, and such a facility would make his work easier. I don't have such connections. But if any of you do know of such a shop, it would be great publicity for them. These are week days, but I'm sure many of us could make the time. I know I would! Leaves the weekend for some driving

Ideally, Randy would like to catch an early flight out on the 15th and get 3 to 4 done that day, 7 on the 16th, and another 5 or so on the 17th before heading back to Denver in the evening. Randy has a double event SCCA & BMWCCA that weekend, and he would like to get back in time to prep the car Friday and rest...

Guys, between those who I know wanted it for Oct, and those that said they would if earlier, we should be at 10 already. This is a great opportunity. Randy asked if there are any affordable hotels in the area. Anyone have any connections to hook him up? Maybe he can stay with one of us who is conveniently located near the garage/shop.

So, now who wants in?

Cool, Mrb6469! And we have DaveNagy above. From the regional forum we have: dinlo, britsf (yes?)...

On vacation now, I think we have the FAQ and DIY Keeper - MINIAC. I can think of a couple more who should be chiming-in later tomorrow...

Looking good!

TonyB,
Count me in!!! This is perfect timing for me.

I want the EvoTech ECU programming as well provided we have an easy way to reprogram if the dealer over-writes the software. TonyB, do we have 10 customers yet! I am very anxious to get this mod by Randy. I am looking into a service facility that we can use.

Cheers!

Keith,

I will be using the Alta pulley, so you don't need to order it. I will end up drop shipping them to the install site.
