Double-charging?

I recently read an article in some european car magazine (I can't remember which one) in which they announced that they were going to attempt to "double-charge" their MCS project car; in other words, they're gonna keep the supercharger and slap on a turbocharger as well. Anyone had experience with 'double-charged' cars? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Seems to me like there would be alot of charger lag on the boost. Is this double-charger concept something tuners should consider?

The theory is that you get the instant boost of the supercharger and once the turbo spools up then the turbo comes in. So you would have full boost through out the whole powerband. But it is supposed to be very hard on the engine. So if they could do it that would be pretty cool.

Is there space in the MINI? Especially since you'd probably want/need a larger intercooler to deal with the extra turbo heat...

Whatever.

yes its been done. As what dak said you have the instant power of the SC. But is also allows the use of a Bigger Turbo than you could with out the SC on the same motor. This allows the extra boost the turbo can be tuned to come up quicker and more of it. Even a small turbo can make 20lbs of boost but it would have to work real hard and over heat. While a bigger one can create the same boost but with less heat as to where a slightly larger intercooler can keep up.

This has been done to a few 1st gen Toyota MR2 Supercharged's where they slap on a turbocharger to run with the stock supercharger. Check them out at www.mr2sc.com

So has anyone been brave enough to try doublecharging their MCS yet? I'd like to get some feedback if anyone's done this. Seems like an interesting concept, and from what has been said there are few disadvantages...

It's the same concept as a twin turbo, except instead of the smaller turbo that builds boost earlier, they just use an SC. Not too radical, but still should be nice.

Hi, new member here! IIRC, this "double charging" was actually done on the Lancia Delta Integrale, and worked quite well.

No, it wasnt. The Delta Integrale and Delta Evoluzione were only turbo charged. What you are thinking of is the Delta S4 B group rally car which was really only a Delta by name.
It had 1759cc and 480 turbo- and supercharged horsepower.

The B group rally car class was eventually banned because they were just too damn awesome (read: ****ing insane).

For those interested it's Sport Compact Car that is doing the double charged engine.
