Germany Is it only in Germany...

...that any mod you get for your engine needs to be inspected officially by the authorities?

In Germany we call it TUEV and it is a major pain in the butt. However, many people don't care and install stuff anyway (why are you looking at me?? )

Is there any other country where there are such (stupidly) tough restrictions?

Well in France they are not allowed to modify any of the mechanicals of their cars at all unless it is a manufacturers approved modification. The only exceptions to this are air filters, exhaust, brake pads and discs. This is because they are consumable parts that wear relatively quickly. So the French mainly concentrate on changing the way the car looks with outrageous bodykits and paintwork.

It was acceptable in the 80's

In the U.S. we can pretty much do what we want. Some states have smog laws, but as long as your car meets the pollution standards, nothing else is required.

Gotten anything useful from MINI2? How about giving a little something back?

Re: Restrictions in France

Ha! That's why...

See, I live in France and I have seen these ourageous exterior bodykits. I'll see whether the French like my Pipercross Induction Kit once it is installed...

Cheers.

Some states have rust-bucket laws, too. Notably New Hampshire. If you have too much rust, you can be required to have the rust removed and the body repaired. Sensible law, I think.

Considering everything, the TUV in Germany is not that bad. I wouldn't mind some govermental control over technical issues - IF I HAD NO FREAKING SPEED LIMIT

here in the US we do have various municipalities that have noise laws prohibiting loud exhausts. On one of these forums I was advised against getting a magnaflow becuse I'd get a ticket (fine). I got one anyway and so far so good!

We now have Drive-Clean in select municipalities in Ontario, Canada, whereby cars older than two years must pass a tailpipe emissions test every two years. Upon sale of a vehicle it must pass the e-test and a safety-test as well.

There was a law in the works to try and outlaw mods (meant to curtail street racing) but it died before gov't could pass it. So for now, there are no problems with mods here so long as it doesn't up the emissions.

I always liked states like Florida, no inspections, (though Maybe the big cities have smogging, since that's a national law for major cities). People drive around in FL with the oddest looking cars. Pickups with 2 foot body and frame lifts... I think the worst any state has is safety inspections, check to make sure the car has brakes, not bald tires, all lights work, etc. Usually every year in such states.

Though I didn't know about NH's rust bucket law? Live free or Die, but not Rust Free? seems counter intuitive....
