I installed one of the Vipers last December. Here are a couple of pictures. I disconnected the intake, because I found that the Cooper is starved for air. With the intake disconnect the dyno test showed just over a 5hp gain. Also check out this thread from last year. "We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail..." -- President George W. Here is what the engine compartment looks like now: Very happy with the current setup. At 4,500 rpm's the intake and the Borla exhaust really kicks in, both in HP and the way it sounds. Here is a another thread, go to the "Cooters International Speedway" about half way down the page. "We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail..." -- President George W. | It looks pretty much like the standard induction kit with the filter breathing more freely. I installed mine yesterday (sorry, no pics yet) and it was really easy although I have never messed with cars before. The sound is amazing and the car pulls better. And, yes, basically all you do is take out the filter box and plug on the Pipercross cone. It is not a permanent modification. Works really well until now - I'd say well worth the money. Of course, you can go with the Viper but it's expensive. | Paddy again ![]() With the intake hose disconnected does it not seem to suck in warm air from the engine bay??? Wot I'm trying to say is the Viper perfomed better on the rolling road with the pipe off as it has access to the outside air as the bonnet is open, and the pipe would have restricted it. But on the road the pipercross doesn't have the same access and just sucks in the engine bay heat, like standard filters with no sheilding, so the intake pipe is used to get cold air straight from outside through the filter. Is'nt using the filter like you are overlooking the point of having a Viper??? This probably won't apply if you rolling roaded the car with the bonnet shut ![]() P.S. the intake pipe Viper intake pipe looks bigger than the engine intake pipe? how would this restrict it??? Cheers |

| I think what is restricing air flow is the intake pipe going from the inlet on the shrouding to the stock air box. You might get better performance from the Viper if you remove the intake tube, then connect the hose directly to the fresh air opening on top of the radiator shrouding. Can you take the pincher clamp off the end of the Viper? I wouldn't want it to fall off when you're driving. I agree, currently you are sucking in a lot of hot air from the engine bay. retroom 2003 MC,LY/W, sport package, wht wheels, cruise, chrome, Kaleido cloth/black, OB computer |

OK, here is what I have been able to deduce, with my very limited knowledge of MINI's and the Viper: Retroom is correct, the air in the engine compartment is much hotter that what is outside. The problem is, I cannot get enough of the outside cold air. Also, with the supplied coated cloth tube there are just too many turns for the cold air to get to the actual Viper filter. While driving the air maybe "rammed in", it loses some of its velocity and it also gets warmed because of the rough surface and number of sharp turns it must take. So, the question is, which would you rather have not cold air or more than enough hot air? The dyno run that I had done back in December seems to bear this line of though out. Do you have photo of this setup??? RedUn yes it does suck in the hot air from the engine compartment. You are also correct in the statement so the intake pipe is used to get cold air straight from outside through the filter. But the problem is, this pipe is the only souce of air, hot or cold. Right now I am happy with the performance of the Viper, I would like to have a pure CAI that can get enough cold air, with no turns and a smooth inner surface. Again, yes, using the Viper the way I am does defeat it true purpose as a CAI, but I figured I would cut my losses and get as much HP & torque as I could. Isn't that what we are all really after in the end??? All, when I was running the Viper with the intake hose attached, the exhaust sounded very nice. A nice deep mellow tone to it. When I disconnected the intake hose, the exhaust now sounds just unbelievable. I am not after the rice burner type of note that they all have at low RPM's. What I wanted was to make a statement when I wanted too, at the higher RPM's, 4500-6500. One last statment, at about 4500 RPM's, my little Cooper really takes off, it is a real kick in the butt. It feels great. I hope that this has answered all the questions put forth to moi. Just finished installing the Mini Madness Rear Sway Bar. Short test drive results are "WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO DO IT?" Talk about fun and performance.... it is even more of a go-kart "We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail..." -- President George W. Bush - Sept. 20, 2001 |
