United-Kingdom Slick 50 and other engine oil additives

Hi,

Anyone have experience of using on of the engine oil additives like "Slick 50" ?

Do they offer any benefits to the MINI Copper S ?

Thanks

Don't do it.
Stick with a good quality full synthetic and a good oil change schedule and you'll never need any additives.

And yes I used to use Slick 50 back in the 80's

I used something similar in my Spitfire and it made a big difference - smoothed the engine out, revved marginally freer and quietened it down when cold. But that was a 1975 engine (building on late 50s-60s technology).

I've toyed with putting some in my Cooper, but certainly at the mo, I don't feel the need. The engine is nice and loose / quiet anyway.

It may be psychological advantage on a modern car, didn't seem to do much to my girlfriend's Clio, but maybe made it marginally quieter. It certainly didn't do it any harm.

Bottom line - try it, see if you like it. If you see no difference, then maybe you're wasting your money so give it up. Once won't hurt.

Just my two penn'orth.

I agree and Disagree at the same time. Products like Slick 50 that are convensional oil with the Teflon additive are not good for the Mini's Syntheic base oil. The Teflon that is suspened in the oil can restrict the flow in the oil channels. Yet another product like Zmax and X1R dont contain the teflon yet can show some difference in the engine. I've used most of the products before Friction wedge which was the pre-production name of Slick 50 did work if you put it in while the car was hot and ran it for 30 mins to coat the engine. Those who put it in while the engine was cold and didnt drive the car long enough would have the oil blockage and damage the engine until they melted and coated the engine. So get an engine treatment that has no Soilds and enjoy. For those who are interested The 87 Toyota runs on Friction wedge/Slick 50 and currently has trip the Million Mile mark.

Not sure abpout in a modern engine but I had Slick 50 in a Passat Diesel (220,000 miles, no oil used), Peugeot 309 (180,000) and a BWM 325 TD (140,000).

I think it can reduce wear and give a longer life but you need to really run the engine in (say 40,000) before you add it and then do it hot. Not sure how it reacts with synthetic either.

WhatCar? Claim: “As hot hatches go, it’s hotter than a blacksmith’s armpit.”

Bottom line: DON"T use Slick 50. Not with a modern engine with fully synthetic oil.

Once won't hurt but it will not make any perceptual difference. You have to use them over extended periods to 'know' what good or evil they do.

these kinds of additives are potentially valuable with older/high milage engines. I think you should stick with synthetic maybe consider Mobil 1 or RedLine if you feel the Castrol is not good enough. I would guess htat a change would negatively impact your warrenty of you had engine trouble so might not be worth the risk.

Bad idea - the Castrol synthetic is all you need. If you're not comfortable going the full service interval, then change every 5,000 miles (the oil is still clear at that point, giving you an idea of how well the MINI engine is sealed).

Might be okay in motors but not in my engine.

The stuff we use as OE is the best there is, Slick 50 won't do any damage as such but the syth Castrol is used in BMW 'M' as standard and its the same spec, you'd be better off by keeping it on spec.
