Anyone using the G-Tech Pro Competition shift light functionality?

I've been contemplating a shift light as of late. I've also been thinking (on again, and off again) about getting the G-Tech Comp Pro unit for its multitude of offerings. I recently learned that it does allow for ideal shift recommendations via shift lights. Hmmmm...

At 240 or so bucks, it is certainly more costly than a shift light, but it seems that it is better in that it recommends shift points, not just the max rev before bouncing. The many other cool features do make it even more appealing obviously...

There seems to be some issues in getting a shift light to work on our MINIs, at least so I have read here, and on MCO. The G-Tech can pick-up the RPMs via the cig lighter, which is slick, and easy. Further looking into the price reveals that maybe the difference is not all that great.

While it seems that a shift light can be had for 40 to 150 bucks, it appears that the cheaper ones need an RPM pill that is 20 or 30 bucks more. And at least for the Auto Meter, it needs a square wave input, and for 65 dollars more, that can be done...

Here is one where the pills are included for $100:

Plus, with another 65, and we are looking at 165 for a shift light.

Or, for 240, one can bag the G-Tech:

I've seen it elsewhere for 240, but this is the first one I found...

I think you know where I'm leaning here. I would however like to know how many use the G-Tech's shift light functionality, and find it worthwhile.

Thanks.

I am running the Gtech as a shift light. It works well. It's also nice that it has Cornering light that can let you know when you are at your known maximum traction. I am playing with tome other shift lights also now. The one thing that you need to know is that the Gtech may require a harness to work with the mini. I have made one, and can provide you with one if you need it.

Thanks

Hey, thanks Dan!

I've heard the same with regards to keeping it level. As far as shift lights go, if I were to go that route, I leaning toward the Stewart Warner Ultra Shift light:

http://www.sw-performance.com/

Don't know if this one would require any square wave conversion though... I sent an email to them last night inquring if they are aware of any MINI guys running with one...

After reading many opinions regarding the G-Tech's accuracy, it seems like a cool "toy," but not somthing I would use that often, minus the shift light functionality...

Thanks again.

Tony,

You would most likely require a Square Wave Converter. I should have a couple units for testing on tuesday or wednesday. I will let you know how they work once I get them in. I have a proform Shift Light that I am using for testing. It is nice as it does not require "Pills" to set the RPM Limit. It has a dial on the back that allows you to adjust it. I will Be selling them as a package once my testing is over.

Thanks
Dan
