Calibrate speedo with a GPS You also should at least calibrate your speedo and tach using a GPS. I would figure out the RPM your tach displays for a true 60 MPH in whichever gear you need to reach a true 60 MPH. And use a real stopwatch for actual timing. Better, use a G-tech or similar instrument that does not require user input. When I do this type of testing I always use a relatively easy start to avoid clutch wear, and increase consistancy (but it raises times). Cheers, Dave

The only true way is a visit to a proper drag strip - Santa Pod hold run what yer brung days, I was going to have a go some time, or you could try the British Mini showdown. I know they hold Mini's Vs Beetle's days I wonder if they will do a New Mini Vs New Beetle Day. They should do we'd all kick the hell out of the Bugs! MINI not coming now so i'm going racing instead

how about find sum one with a std cooper s and test ure car against theirs?? that wud prove it ![]() A phone stop watch is accurate enuff for a 0-60 test if u ask me it's jus getting it perfect i find a countdown works best for the set off and then yer mate can jus watch the speedo on the mini an stop it at 60

"add 2 seconds"- rubbish! maybe one second- bmw told me 9.2 and stats given are always lower than the truth, or higher depending on the way you look at it- e.g it says cooper's top speed is 124mph in the manual, and on the flat i can have 130mph, not that i have obviously cos thats illegal in England. haha

the 130mph reading is probably a true 120-125mph reading on a GPS - more accurate. I have a cooper and initially it does feel a lot fast than the 9.1s - since my previous car quoated similar figure, so that was judging by the feel. But once the car gets above 6000revs, it gets kinda breathless and the gearing is a tad low in 1st/2nd.... so my conclusion in the end was that 8.5-9.0s is probably about right. The cooper gets off line very smartly and has good mid-range torque.

Autocar tested the Cooper using their accurate GPS timing at 9.4 secs (the manufacturers' figures are never pessimistic - it's not in their interests to be). Also a speedo reading of 130mph is always optimistic and as stated above is probably 10% out. "Do try to keep up Nigel!"

I have a Tazzo VPC to measure times and road hp, and my best 0-60 has been 8.95 sec (38F with 15" all seasons) and worst 9.75 sec (72F with 16"/SS-03's and a full tank). I use a pretty tame take off, as I don't want to abuse the clutch&transmission. Among other things, It also measures average and peak hp between 2 user set mph settings (calculates speed by integrating acceleration rather than measuring a tach signal). This should come in handy for before/after comparisons if I do any performance mods later. ![]()
