Speed Limiter

I was just wondering (on a very boring Sunday) what kind of speeds you could get out of the Cooper if it weren't speed (or rev) limited in the 5th gear. I've seen the 'theoretical top speed in each gear' but I wonder how the aerodynamics would affect the actual top speed. Has anyone un-limited their car? Is there any way that one could? (Not that I'm going to! 90mph cruising is more than enough for me for the next few years!!!)

The cooper isn't limited (unless i'm wrong, and that's the reason why the damn thing won't go over 130mph!)...

Just some of the posts in the top speed in each gear thread mentioned the top gear being rev limited. Maybe its only limited on the S tho.

Is that rev-limited, or just not having enough power to go any faster?

I'm sure there is a limiter on the car, there are on most these days.

Even the old mini had a rev limiter.

the MINI has gone...

Arse. I meant speed limiter, not rev limited.

Of course, there is a rev limiter on the car, at about 6800 rpm I think

Either way they both have the same effect, the rev limiter won't let you go above a certain speed because it won't let the revs go any higher.

the MINI has gone...

The MINI's are all rev and speed limited. They don't each go 10mph faster than the last by chance you know.

The mini s does have a speed limiter from what i have read, most cars have them, when you reach the speed that the car is limited to it usually either turns completly off or just stops going any fast

The Cooper is speed limited to 123mph,why such a weird number,I have no idea. The Cooper S is speed limited to 135mph.If the engine is chipped from say John Cooper Works, then that would remove the speed limiter. The rev limited would not be affected.

The John Cooper Works S can do about 145mph.

Cool.

Speed and revs limits are controlled by ECM calibration.

A reason for a strange number may be the rating chosen by BMW for the tyres - i.e. cheaper tyre = lower spped max.

My autobahn experience tells me that you can get about 130 mph out of a Cooper (only just), but that's it, because the revs won't go above 5500 in 5th gear.
