The panel replacement filters don't make any noise since they are in the factory housing, and these housings have a baffle to cut even more of the intake noise.
The cone type filters, being open will have a deep tone on acceleration, not too loud, actually sounds good. But if you want "0" sound go with the panel filter.
Blue Thunder have you changed the std air box on you Cooper S yet?
Also I noted that their are only three "tunning stubs" i.e. when you have a look at the ait intake on the S their is two stub off to the right in the intake pipe and the one further on that's is vertical. Now I don['t really know what they are for and I was hoping some one could pass comment on their function. At a guess I was thinking of two things to stop turbulence or induction roar.
What I was hoping to do is use a replacement high flow element and block of these"tunning stubs". So at the end of it I would have a system that flow a little better and have some more induction/supercharger whine (IMHO it needs more supercharge whine, just not loud enough) and still has cold air feed from outside the engine bay and lastly look stock.
The chambers attached to the intake tube are resonator chambers to help deaden intake noise. Several of the new BMW models have them also. I don't think they serve any other purpose.
My mini is bigger than yours ...
