Wales EBC brakes and pads

Can anyone out there give me some impartial advice on fitting EBC discs and pads to my S Works Lohen have suggested red stuff fronts and green stuff rears for the pads.

I really don't want to change the stock X-lights at the moment and so the choice seems pretty limited

I would recomend greenstuff front & rear with the EBC discs, I have had this set up for a while now, at first I was not that impressed but when you get them run in properly they are a very good choice for the money but do not think that it gets rid of brake fade completely because it does not although an improvement is very noticable after standing on the brakes the third or forth time round over stock, A couple of pics in my gallery...

Don`t know if this is impartial But I have been running EBC greens and discs for about 12 months and I find them varied in performance.( Believe these are the old compound )

Sometimes you wonder if you will stop, and I think I can say with hand on heart the ABS has never kicked in on dry surfaces. Also initial bite appears to be poor

I spoke to the guy on the EBC stand at the Autosport show last week and asked him for his opinion and his reply was to change to Red Stuff Ceramic front and back.

He also asked what car I had and how much Umph did it have, cos anything approaching 200bhp and above should run Ceramic Red Stuff for the road. Still totally confused well so am I

The only true answer is to upgrade via the bigger brake route but then whose do you choose and how much do you spend not forgetting you have to do the rear as well if you truly want Mega Brakes.

I agree that one seems a bit strange .It should be one or the other.
I have nearly made up my mind to try some red ceramic.

Good luck with the red, I have always been happy enough with the green but let us know how you get on...oh another good thing about the green is the 90% less dust....

Lohen say they run their road car on the red/green combo and say it gives better overall braking performance. I would go for one or the other though and am leaning towards red at the moment.

loking on the EBC website it seems the ceramics are only avaialble for a very limited few cars. They also say Greenstuff and normal red stuff aren't suitable for track day use.

I have taken 2 of my mini's on track with stock pads and not withstanding a bit of fade and some scary burning smells (plus one very iffy fade moment at Rockingham that lead to a visit to the grass ) they held up alright.

What exactly do they mean "not suitable for track day use"

If I were to do a track day on stock brakes I would run Ferodo DS3000 on the front,
and stock on the rear. Then for the road I would put stock in the front too. For track use
on FWD 'the norm' is to use a pad with higher braking co-efficient on the front.
IMHO both the green and red ebc and also the Ferodo DS 2500 are disapointing.
Other incredible pads to 'almost match' the DS3000 are Carbotech and Black Hawk.
Neither of these 3 are technically road legal and are noisy are messy. No pad will stop the fluid boiling, but until that point with these pads the brakes will feel as if from another world.

No I am only going on the advertising splurge given out on the reds and greens by EBC.
Also some of the comments on other car forums.

This is beginning to do my head in Think I will adopt the hole in floor and a pair of rubber boot technique

I've opted for GreenStuff pads and Tarox G88 discs. I'd heard a couple of good reviews of this combo and imho the discs look great (not that it should affect your decision ). The only problem is that I haven't fitted them yet because I'm waiting for my current pads to die (probably this Saturday at Bruntingthorpe )

I don't know how much EBC discs are but you can get the Tarox discs from http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/

Nice link Max, unfortunately it says nothing about Ceramic Red Stuff. The comments on GS though are interesting. I wonder if the newer compound that is being used on greens would in some way improve on the braking over the older compounds?

I think you will find that the red pads have a slight reduction in brake dust where as the green V4 I have seen mentioned between 60- 90%...

IMHO as the vast majority of the braking power comes from the front it doesnt matter that much what you put on the rear-stock pads should be fine. Most of the Challenge cars in the previous years ran stock rear brake pads
and Mintex fronts. If fade is a problem -how are you driving on the road? If its for track use as well you need to be thinking about upgrading the hoses and brake fluid too.
I am finding the Greenstuffs on the front more than adequate so far on the road-we`ll wait and see what happens on a track though.
