United-Kingdom Control Switch To Open JCW Intake Flap?

Hi Everyone,

I want to put the JCW Intake on the standard S.
However, sometimes I'd like to have noise from the Intake all the time, and others only above 4,500 (or whatever).

Has anyone put a switch inside their car as to when they can open and close the Intake?

It would be nice to still retain the automatic opening at 4,500 if possible too.

Any ideas?

Cheers

J.

The extra intake is to increase airflow at high revs, having it open all the time would cause the car to have too much oxygen all the time. That would decrease your mpg and likely cut performance - it would be like running a Honda with the VTEC stuck in high lift mode.

Would it not just be like running with an normal after market Cold Air Intake?

Performance and MPG would be comparable to a similar after market CAL, like an ALTA or K&N?

I've heard of people having the flap fixed open at the MINI dealer to achieve the noise at all engine speeds.

Does the flap opening and closing simply allow air to come in from the windscreen air inlet.

It will not cause it to have "too much oxygen", the engine only sucks in what it needs after all. It will make it a little easier to breathe in lower revs. The flap is there to keep things quieter at low revs, that's all.

I have thought of adding a switch as well. It is apparently just a solenoid so it should be relatively easy to add wires to and switching on for short periods of time. Not sure if it's something that you would always want to leave open as it may wear out the solenoid. But for a short time like autocross run or 1/4mi drag it certainly makes sense.

It may however be easier just to remove the physical flap for your racing day.

I'll have my intake at the end of the month and I'll investigate then.

You can have a lean mixture, which means you have too little fuel for the air charge available, making the mixture very volatile, very hot and prone to melt your pistons. Is it too much oxygen....well, for the amount of fuel available in the charge it is.
would it happen cuz of some flap....doubt it. It would only happen cuz there was a fault in the computer or an air leak AFTER the sensors.
Hope this helps
