Managed to kill my engine at the weekend in my 2003 Cooper which will not be covered by warranty and need to consider options. Obvious option is to buy an engine from a written off car. Hope someone can help with the following questions:
1. Cooper/ One engines- I've heard that the the engines are the same bar the chip- is this correct? Could I therefore also look for a 2nd hand Mini One engine?
2. Likely cost- any thoughts?
3. Fitting time- plan to get someone else to do this, how many hours labour should this be?
4. Job complexity- could I consider doing it myself. I'm certainly not an experienced mechanic but could me and a friend who is a reasonable spanner man fit an engine in a weekend sos aving me a few quid?
Not covered by warranty! You been a naughty boy???
Yes the one and cooper engines are the same, bar the exhaust (tailpipe) and the chip. There may be some minor differences to peripherals but i doubt it. The bits from your original would just swap over anyway.
To give you an accurate answer i really need to know what you mean by blown. If you've just blown a cylinder then you can have them relined and bored. It's not too expensive, mine on my XR3i about 6 years ago was £550 including labour and an upgrade to 1850cc. But that was on a very easy to work on car that you can find parts for by the side of the road!
Alternatively, you may have burnt some pistons, or dropped 1 or 2 into your pistons needing a top end rebuild.
Do you know exactly what you've done? Who did the diagnosis?
I wouldn't change the engine on a nearly new car, and i'm quite experienced, probably done 50 engine swaps on old mini's, escort MK1 and 2's, cortina's etc. Too much computer witchcraft on new ones....
