I have had the new JCW air box fitted and would recomend it, it really cuts in above 4,000rpm and the car certainly feels much more responsive, well worth the money !!!!!
Being that it cost me nothing to have the dealer install it, I am pleased. It's a little more responsive and a bit more "winey" around 4500rpms. If I had to pay the full shot, no way!
I would have done the after market upgrades and say the hell with the warrenty issues that might pop up.
Just had the JCW Airbox fitted to my MCS 05 today and noticed a real difference. The engine certainly seems alot more responsive in all gears and from 4500rpm you get an increase in SuperCharger whine
Cost me £23.00 to have fitted by my local dealer (bought the filter through MINI2) and it's covered by the Warranty so no problems if anything should go wrong
I tried the Alta Kit a few weeks ago and to be honest I found it to be too loud. Everytime you hit the gas you could hear the throttle flap open and close from inside the car.
Had the JCW air intake on when I picked it up last week. Peppy little sucker. Don't have a lot to compare it too but my MA was impressed and said she was going to have it put on hers.
After much searching and discussions I just replaced the standard paper filter with a cotton performance filter......immediate improvement in response and the engine is super smooth......doesn't have the additional air opening at 4000rpm....but also doesn't have the $1000 price tag....mine cost $160.......and it is the same one being used by many in the JCW air box.......I would reccomend to anyone.
I got the new panel filter from my BMW dealer who fitted it for me......Doncaster Motors in Melbourne. The service manager there runs a JCW and knows his stuff on the upgrades....JCW and after market....I would advise anyone to talk to them. As to the picture provided......the BMW service manager assures me that he uses a panel filter in his......whatever....the car is definitely smoother, more responsive and a bit quicker through power curve. 15% pulley next.
If you do decide to buy it, may I recommend a way to reduce your cost in half. I just did this myself this week.
Order the JCW upgrade kit. It includes the intake and a set of larger fuel injectors (380's). Best place to buy it is through Mini of Sterling. Ask for Herb. Price ofr the kit is $476.
Then either intall the whole kit, or sell off the injectors. That's what I did. I just wanted the injectors and split the price of the kit with someone. We both got what we needed at about half price.
