Lifetime Fuel Filter???

Can anyone explain to me how a lifetime fuel filter works? Have asked 3 dealers and they don't know.

It seems to me that if it filters out crapola, it would have to be cleaned or replaced at some point. I know you just about have to take out the fuel tank to get to it. Isd this why it's a lifetime filter? Because BMW doesn't want to scare their customers.

dont know how it works... but a lot of Manufacturers are using lifetime fuel filters.
Like Audi, Ford, Citroen.... loads of em now dont need changing. I suppose it could be that cos Petrol is refined to a higher quality than diesel, so it doesnt get so much cr@p in the tank/lines than you do in a diesel.
Just my 2 pence on it...

I agree with dave....all the above dealers mentioned use long life filters, when i was parts manager of Audi i had many customers ask this question, if they were really that worried about the fuel filter we would just change it
