Australia pulley upgrade

I have just ordered from the USA an ULTRIK 15% reduction pulley for my 2002 Mini S. How easy are they to fit if you have average mechanical skills rather than paying for a mechanic to do the work? Any clues ?

hey mate, theres a DIY around here somewhere.. if not have a look at www.webbmotorsports.com , there would probably be one there.

but to answer ur question, it looks pretty complicated, esp if u dont have the pulley removal tool to remove the stock pulley and given that ur meddling with ur engine, u'd probably want this done right

post some pics and let us know how u go with the DIY

If you have average mechanical skills and Randys instructions, its pretty straight forward, but you do need the pulley clamp.

John.

Thank you for the advice it appears from the pages you sent me to that i need a pulley puller and also a belt tensioner tool unless you can obtain the special, standard pulley puller. I think i will take the car to my BMW agents Klosters in Newcastle, get them to do the work.

Hey I just bought my 02 MCS from Klosters, the best service I have ever had from a dealer.

Let me know how the pulley upgrade goes as I would be very interested myself

I installed an ALTA pulley myself a year and a half ago. I watched an ALTA rep do 3 jobs in an hour each and charge $400. each job, part included. My skills are good, I refuse to part with that much cash so.....The engine/trans jacking up is frightfull if you have not seen it done. I was able to build a pulley removal tool that worked, it was pretty well destroyed when I was done. Once the old pulley is off, 30 minutes later you are starting the engine. The result of the pulley change is nothing short of awesome, I strongly suggest you consider a new exhaust at the same time. I installed an ALTA exhaust, I was driven by the sound and they had what I wanted. Power comes on in the 2700 range and stops at the rev limiter, and the S snarls all the way up. The wheels spin in 2nd and 3rd with little help. Anyway, I digress. I took about 6 hrs to do the job, mostly removing the old pulley. The space is limited to work in. enjoy

Australia pulley puller

Thanks for the support Mike. A question about your puller where did you get the dimensions from so that you could manufacture a pulley puller and how did you over come the issue of access did you have to remove the belt tensioner? or did you copy the design showed in the minimania pages?? that allows you to remove the pulley without removing the tensioner?

The puller I built mimiced the bilit type the companies use. They turn theirs on a CNC type machine and clamp it on the pulley. I used steel U shaped clamps and a puller to do it. I destroyed the pulley and puller in the process. The idler is an easy part to remove. The hardest mentally is jacking the motor/trans assembly up after removing the bolts. You must lift it high enough so the supercharger pulley and shaft are above the frame far enough to work on. Factor in that you are working on an expensive bit of machinery...use caution, NO impacts at all on the shaft, just pull force. Other than that, piece of cake!! I am still running my original belt, 33,000 miles and no slippage at all. You might find that some pulley retailers will lend/rent the puller when you buy the pulley. I think this would save a HUGE amount of time and effort.
Good luck
Mike

Know this may not help at this stage but I am going for the 17% pulley from Promini which I am getting from Craig at Wheel warehouse in Adelaide. He will loan me the complete installation kit including pulley puller and tensioner bar etc. The loan cost of the kit is just the cost of getting it back to him when I have finished.

Are you replacing your plugs with a cooler version as well?

Well its fitted and what a blast best bang for bucks deal ever. Thanks to all those who sent suggestions. I manufactured a pulley puller but I asked Klosters BMW in Newcastle to fit the 15% Minimania pulley and belt job took 3 hrs. I don't know if I'm dreaming this, but my on-board computer tells me I'm getting 6.8 L/ 100 at 115Km on F3 freeway. As opposed to 7.1 with standard pulley has any body else had this experience? Or is this due to other variables such as temp /humidity etc.

Yeah my economy didnt suffer with the 19% pulley. It was the MTH which killed it.
