I had a Z4 for a week not so long ago, can't comment on it "officially" as a review, but I much prefer the S. The Z4 was/is a GREAT cruising car. Nice to get the top down and roll around the streets in it, and if you give it some welly it's pretty good fun (although completely different to a MINI). The MINI is a point and squirt, fun as you like, corner munching bag of fun. The Z4 is a big stylish, comfortable cruising machine, with optional fun (but it's harder to have fun in a big car I find anyway, especially with more power, as you have to be driving at silly speeds to get the same sort of sensations).
Moris, Although I only had a test-drive in the 2.0 Z4 a week or so ago, I pretty much agree with Paul's comments It was sunny and fairly warm, and so the open-top motoring was cool, but the driving didn't really compare with the S
I've got an extended test-drive in a Z4M on Tuesday next week and will let you know how that goes
Signed the papers yesterday, cancelled my order today.
Being charged the high side of full price for the Monterey auto show, including entry into the concourse where I would be presented with my new car didn't sit well with me. Requiring the new owners to foot all the expenses for a MINIUSA publicity stunt wasn't something I wanted to do. We were looking at using almost a month of vacation time plus the price of the car plus $7k for the tour and that did not make economic sense for me.
True, we could wait and take delivery in October at my local dealer, but after getting excited over the Monterey trip that was a let down. Besides, the turbos come out in February so I just cancelled my GP order.
Hi Morris, not sure about the Z4, I guess it's the wierd creases on the doors and seemingly short rear end that gets me. Also the £1275 for five years servicing compared with the £500 mini deal is another consideration.
I think this is the wrong forum to ask for opinions on a Z4 - although it should be remembered that the 3.0 litre model out performed the Boxster S at the track.
I think the Z4 coupe thats coming will be very well regarded. Big engine, good handeling, rear wheel drive. The only thing you have to remember is to ditch the runflats! now were have i heard that before.
I thought the car was for Jim, April...? What was his view on it all. The cost was a lot, but at the end of the day, you/he either wanted the GP, or didn't. You surely shouldn't have made this decison soley based on the fact that you couldnt have 'one of the first' as thats a bit pointless...
I can't wait to have one of the first, we all stylise our cars to make them look different, I think being one of the first to have a car which truly looks fab, a true pleasure and never a chore!!
$2000 plus your other expenses is rediculous, and you should get the car as per allocation. However, i would have been surprised if you had got one of the first cars anyway, as you only very recently placed your order. I would have thought that at least half the cars would have been allocated before you placed your order... which would have put you nearer the back of the queue anyway surely...???
No, my dealer told me they pick who gets the first car, and I was the one chosen. I was definitely in for going to Monterey but just couldn't see the time and money expense. As I posted in another thread, both Fuzzy and I were going to have to take almost a month of vacation time and pay a minimum of $7k for expenses. We could to the CA Dreamin run for that and have enough left over to do Cotswold.
