Well I have finally found something I dont like about the car......
Like PMP says, why bother with half a job? The rear speakers cannot weigh that much??
So what are those round things on the C-Pillar trim?
On all my cars I've always just had the front speakers balanced high, lets face it unless you have a stereo? (I know its an oxymoron) thats capable of quad the rears are just replicating the front sound anyway. If you go to a gig the PA is in front of you , theres no one in the back with a GP anyway, who needs it ?
Goonery is totally right, there's no need for back speakers ever unless you're going to sit in your car and watch DVDs and need surround sound (which would be quite sad) or to give your rear passengers just a bit of volume. There is zero need for them in the GP so I'm quite glad they aren't there. Serious SQ setups almost always disinclude them, anyway.

Just sidetracking this slightly but I am interested. Howcome so many systems are now being based on a greater number of speakers? I dropped out of following the Ice thing a few years back but was it not something to do with installing different speakers to cater for different sound ranges so you get a better quality sound? I just remember someone explaining speaker pods a few years back but I cannot remember the detail......
Would like to know how it works - I got the harmon kardon in the current motor and you can tell the difference in sound quality. How could I emulate this in a GP two speaker system without doing a major install? Head unit & speakers?
More speakers: more possibilities.
On the MINI, the rears do most of the low frequency stuff - especially with the H/K system. Unless the front speakers in the GP are different to the normal stock ones, the sound will be rather empty at the bottom end.
The other reason for lots of speakers is to simplify the amplifiers - each speaker / wiring has a certain resistance which means for more power, you need more voltage. Once you get to where you need 10V or more you need to boost the cars 12V internally which gets complex.
A typical 4ohm speaker will thus run out of voltage at about 25W.
So if you put lots of speakers in, you can send 25W to each and get more overall sound power without needing to make the amplifier too complicated.
[sorry, very OT!]

Joogle, you are probably reffering to the 10, 12, 18-speaker Bose systems and the like that the premium manufacturers will brag about. Many of them do it but it's just silly. There is just no need.
And, yes, of course, component speaker systems are better - that's not what I meant by saying there is no need for more than 2 speakers.
I'll revise: There's no need for more than two sets of component speakers and a sub.
