MINI British MotorShow 2006

Hi all,

Just got back from the MINI British MotorShow 2006 in London. Wow, the GP looked amazing... even better "in the flesh"! Spoke to a MINI representative who was on hand to discuss the GP & mentionned that I can't wait to get my new baby in Sept. He sounded surprised that I was going to be one of the luck few to have a GP - as if he hadn't seen anyone that had one coming - he said that loads of people had enquired about putting their name down on a waiting list & that everyone was blown away by it/loved it & wanted one. Sounds like the GP is going to be a winner/v popular then, so now I'm even more pleased to be one of the lucky 459 UK owners!

Also picked up the latest issue of "Top Gear" magazine. It had a review of the GP. They gave it 15/20 & said that "its wonderful in small doses. It blurs your vision & makes your ears bleed. Could be an investment too." Good write-up & def worth a read.

While I was at the MINI MotorShow Stand, I showed my MINI keys to the guys 'on the door' to the MINI Barge VIP area & picked up a couple of freebies including a USB Memory Stick which had the following on it... worth reading (extracted from the attached documents):

"MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit...
• The most powerful production MINI ever built.
Developing 218 hp at 7,100 rpm from its 1.6-litre engine, the MINI Cooper S featuring the John Cooper Works (JCW) GP Kit – or MINI GP as it has been dubbed - is the most powerful production MINI ever built. Output per litre is a stunning 136 hp.
• Unlimited fun – limited edition.
The MINI GP offers almost unlimited levels of driving enjoyment. Production, however, is strictly limited. Only 2,000 MINI GPs have been built, and only 459 will make it back to the UK. All are sold!
• Even more powerful than the MINI CHALLENGE.
The MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit is derived from the cars raced in the MINI CHALLENGE Clubsport Series. Developing a peak torque of 250 Nm, and top speed of 149 mph, the MINI GP actually outperforms the MINIs that have raced around UK circuits for the past four years.
• Efficient aerodynamics, low weight, two seats.
Removing non-essential materials and equipment, and adding power and aerodynamic enhancements, has set up the MINI GP to be the most exciting MINI ever. It also makes this the first MINI with only two seats.
• Limited-slip differential, ASC+T, EBD and DSC.
Modern electronic systems optimise the handling of the MINI Cooper S with the JCW GP Kit. A limited-slip differential, ASC+T (Automatic Stability Control + Traction), EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution) and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) come as standard.
• Clear colour concept highlights exclusivity.
The MINI Cooper S with its JCW GP Kit is available in the exclusive Thunder Blue metallic paintwork with a Pure Silver roof. Red caps on the wing mirrors highlight its limited edition status.

Supreme performance, impressive efficiency.
The letters ‘GP’ in the model designation stand for ‘Grand Prix’.
“In the creation of this car, I wanted to honour my father’s successful Grand Prix racing cars”, states Mike Cooper, the Managing Director of John Cooper Works. “And this MINI is simply ideal for this purpose: a special model with more power, less weight, and even greater fun.”
There has never been a pro¬duction MINI with as much power and the same performance as the MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit – neither on the road nor in motorsport.
This level of engineering fine-tuning is possible only in exclusive small series production runs and cannot be implemented in a conventional production process.
Acceleration from 0–62mph comes in just 6.5 seconds. At 32.8 mpg, fuel consumption in the combined cycle is exactly the same as the 210hp MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit and both cars obviously meet the EU4 emissions standard. Proof of the engineers’ tuning skills.
Formula for power: high-charge pressure and precise engine management.
The MINI GP uses an extremely effective concept to ensure optimum power and performance. The tuning specialists started out by replacing the compressor used in the “regular” MINI Cooper S with a new unit run¬ning at even higher speeds. The extra intake air required for this purpose is provided by an adapted air filter with an additional intake flap opening auto¬matically as soon as engine speeds reach 4,500 rpm. The additional charge pressure built up in this way ensures optimised flow conditions in the cylinder head, where the outlet ducts have also been modified. This required injection nozzles with higher throughput of fuel and air, while high-power spark plugs and the modi¬fied engine manage¬ment ensure a precise combustion process and efficient utilisation of fuel.
The rear silencer has also been adjusted to accommodate the higher level of exhaust counter-pressure.
The engineers have made the intercooler even more efficient. Counter-pressure is down by approximately 40 per cent, ensuring sig¬nificantly better air and gas throughput within the engine. Maxi¬mum permissible engine speed is now 7,150 rpm, with an in¬crease not only in peak out¬put, but also in maximum torque.
The extra power and performance of the compressor is heard as well as felt. The super-tuned MINI sound is blasted through the twin-pipe sports exhaust fitted in the middle of the rear air dam.
The extra-light and precise six-speed gearbox adds to the thrill. Short, sharp shifts are an integral part of the MINI driving experiences. In fifth gear, the MINI GP accelerates from 50–75 mph in just 6.6 seconds. And shifting down to fourth gear, the same sprint is achieved in 5.3 seconds. Even in sixth gear acceleration from 50–75mph comes in just 8.8 seconds.
Comparison tests on the race track proved that the MINI GP offers even better performance than the popular MINI Cooper S with the JCW Tuning Kit. The MINI GP laps the Nordschleife of Nürburgring in under 8 minutes, 42 seconds. Almost 14 se¬conds faster than the production model. The ‘GP’ bene¬fits not only from its greater engine power, but also from aerodynamic improvements that reduce lift on both the front and rear axle.
For perfect handling: limited-slip differential and ASC+T.
Like every MINI, the MINI GP is front-wheel drive. Loss of traction at the front would destroy the engineers’ work, so the car comes as standard with a limited-slip differential. This ensures that grip is maintained wherever physically possible, particularly on slippery surfaces or those of varying quality. Extra stability when setting off (or applying brakes) is facilitated by Auto¬matic Stability Control (ASC+T) which also comes as standard.
Extra safety at no extra cost: DSC as standard.
Other electronic systems serve to facilitate the undoubted handling abilities of the MINI GP. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) sensors register excess lateral forces in a fast bend, reducing engine power or applying the brakes to help stabilise the car.
If the car starts to oversteer, the DSC control unit will apply the brakes on the outer front wheel in the bend. If the driver is already applying the brakes, pressure will be increased on the outer front wheel and reduced on the inner wheels. When un¬der¬steering, the DSC control unit applies the brakes on the inner wheel in a bend. Again – if the driver has already responded – increasing brake pressure on the inner wheel to an even higher degree and reducing brake pressure on the outer wheels.
Handling and agility: a great double act.
Thanks to its direct steering, the MINI GP offers precise handling through the bends. Sports suspension with firm springs and extra-strong dampers adds supreme agility to the ‘perfect’ package.
The dynamic potential of the car is supported by special sports brakes developed by John Cooper Works. 16-inch brake discs (inner-vented at the front) ensure that the fastest-ever production stops as well as goes. Red brake calli¬pers on the front wheels distinguish these sports brakes and extra-large brake pistons and special brake pads contribute to the 62-0mph time.
A range of ‘premium car’ electronic safety systems fitted as standard contributes to optimum stopping power. These include ABS anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC). EBD prevents an over-brak¬ing effect on the rear axle. Under serious braking, a car’s centre of gravity naturally moves to the front. Rear wheel lock may then destabilise the car. EBD helps to distribute braking forces between the front and rear wheels. CBC meanwhile controls distribution of brake power between the two wheels on each axle. When applying the brakes in a bend,
a dynamic shift in the centre of gravity may result in greater brake force on the outer side of the car. CBC provides an appropriate counter-steering effect, optimising the car’s stability on the road.
Low-profile 18-inch Run-flat tyres are fitted on light-alloy rims, exclusive to the MINI GP.
Slender double spokes on the black rims look dramatic and help cooling air to flow over the brake discs.
Lightweight construction taking motorsport as a role model.
Lightweight construction was key to developing this ‘supermini’. The MINI Cooper S with its John Cooper Works GP Kit weighs some 50 kg less than a “regular” MINI Cooper S with the usual range of features and equipment.
Engineers worked in great detail to strip the car of unnecessary weight. The rear axle longitudinal arms are now made of aluminium, while minimum use of sound-insulating material lightened the load. Discarding the rear seats reduced the power-to-weight ratio to just 5.1 kilos per horsepower. And since the reduction of unsprung masses is particularly crucial to the car’s driving dynamics, the low weight of the rims also contributes to the MINI GP’s performance diet.
Aerodynamics package for extra downforce and lower air resistance.
The MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit is topped off with an aerodynamics package perfected in wind tunnel tests. Downforce is enhanced on the front and rear wheels, and air resistance reduced substantially improving the car’s handling at high speeds.
The front spoiler is re-designed merging smoothly into the front wheel cut-outs and tapering out into a black “lip” in front of the wheels. It sits closer to the road, improving downforce on the front axle. The air intake is enlarged, whilst silver design elements in the front air dam make the MINI GP look wider from the front. The side-sills are also closer to the road and feature increased curvature directly in front of the rear wheels that promotes the car’s aerodynamics.
Adding the final touch in the wind tunnel.
Precision engineering and thorough testing in the wind tunnel have served to optimised the design of the carbon fibre rear spoiler, as it too, contributes to increased downforce.
The rear spoiler is mounted on the upper part of the boot door on the MINI GP. The third brake light has therefore moved down to the lower edge of the
rear window. To reduce weight, the rear window wiper has been removed.
MINI GP: branded and exclusive.
All 2,000 MINI GPs feature the exclusive Thunder Blue metallic paintwork, with the roof finished in Pure Silver. Chili Red wing mirrors, and a black background to the rear number plate and the front air intake scoop all contribute to the car’s striking looks.
Di¬rect¬ly above the driver’s door, each MINI GP bears its “GP” stamp and the car’s four-digit production number – from 0001 to 2000.
Hot spot for two.
Sports seats, with adjustable thigh support, are designed and built by Recaro. They are finished in fin¬est Panther Black leather, with red seams matching the detailing on the car’s wing mirrors.
The Pure Silver dashboard hous¬es the central instrument display of speedometer and rev counter and is positioned above the steering column in the driver’s primary line of vision. The dials in both displays are finished in anthra¬cite, with the needles standing out in red. The on-board computer display is integrated in the rev counter, and another “GP” model designation placard bear¬ing the car’s series number stands out on the dashboard in front of the passenger.
Ample space for luggage and a reinforcement tube.
Instead of the usual rear seat bench, the MINI Cooper S with the John Coop¬er Works GP Kit comes with a po¬lished reinforcement tube that connects the spring strut domes on the rear axle. This strengthens the car and helps prevent luggage from sliding against the front seat backrests.
The smooth, flat loading area significantly improves the MINI’s practicality with 670 litres available. The entire floor of the loading compartment can also be opened in a z-configuration to the front, providing easy and convenient access to two storage compartments beneath.
Standard equipment.
The on-board computer, Bose audio system with CD player, leather sports seats complete with seat heating, and the leather sports multi-function steering wheel, white indicators, velour foot mats, lights package and tinted windows are all standard."

There is an actual car - not an order slot - up for sale on ebay, 3K markup on list.
Photo has been taken so you cannot see the roof number though.
(Mileage is also meant to be 0 - but Im hearing that so far they have had 3-4 miles on the clock of most of the dealer received cars)

Is "Patrick Of Warrington" a MINI dealership, or just some car dealership?

Ian C. Gloucester, MA, USA (UK expat) driving GPMINI or a non-MINI!

Thats just the e-bay username.

I cannot see it being a mini dealership, officially they are not allowed to sell vehicles through e-bay...... then again they were not supposed to order cars for demo use....

The picture shows a red floor, Halliwell Jones have a MINI dealership in Warrington, but MINI dealerships don't have red floors, so its a puzzle

Trying to workout what the black car is in the photo...... Is it a 6 series?

Looks like a re-seller - nothing like a Mini/BMW dealership.
