You can actually build your own lightweight Cooper S edition....

It's been done (somewhat), removing the AC will reduce weight by 23lbs, and since the stock flywheel is 29lbs, putting a lighter one in will definitely reduce some weight. Of course, not having a sunroof means approx 65lbs less weight on the top of the car.

Here's a link to a modified Cooper S that Grassroots Motorsports worked on, they chronicle what they did:

Can I suggest they just leave out the dashboard? That way not only will they save a whole heap of weight but the car will be so much more enjoyable as it won't rattle so much!!

54 Cooper, BEP/Black, Chilli Pack, ASC+T, SS+, Alarm, CD Boost, 16" FIN Alloys, Anthracite Headlining, Xenons, Multi-function S/Wheel, Driving Lamps, sh*t build quality...

Now SOLD!!! Goodbye MINIs and good riddance....

The lightwieght addition could just have a bunch of JCW stuff installed at the port (imagine a JCW's version of the MC40) like Carbon fiber mirrors, carbon fiber trunk trim, carbon fiber dash, carbon fiber hood scoop, carbon fiber strut brace, and etc. Also included could be JCW 18 inch wheels, JCW suspension and JCW brakes and maybe some custom leather sport seats that have JCW embroidered since the real JCW sports seats will never come here since MiniUSA does not want to reduce the MCS safety by taking the airbags out of the seats.

In all I doubt this will be a real stripped down lightwight racer but more a MCS with alot of carbon fiber trim and JCW badges since any significant change might require the MCS to get recertified and there is no way thats going to happen for just a few thousand special cars.

Fight for the smallest minority- "The Individual".

It's planned as a "proper" light weight S, put together at Oxford.

Okay. So has anyone put their hard-earned down as a deposit, or know of anyone who has?

[Happened to ask the Son of Coop, 'bout 2002, at the Mini meet at Beaulieu whether any fibre glass would soon be used on the MINI. He just laughed, and said, "No way"]...But once BM did theirs, it was on the cards, wasn't it?

Even better, this is weight in the front of the car.
It's not too hard to dump weight rearward and make the back very twitchy but too lose it where the MINI is fattest is nice.

When the MCS was being born I remember the dealers saying that the public always get to know what is happening before they do, ie., told officially...Looks like this is going the same way...

If acceleration and overall performance are what are uppermost in your minds, here, what about, say, a Lotus Elise? Any comments?

Easy, Matt - there could be one helluva premium already built in...
Sounds great though, dunnit?
How would you get on for body repairs in the affected areas, I wonder...
