I think I've said it before. Think "wind swept" and "hungry for air" and "glued to the ground" and you might get some ideas. Reckon it would look good in silver.
most of us believed you Paul and understand why you can only reveal info at certain points in time, it wouldn't be fair to your sources which I am sure would dry up if you gave away too much too soon
Once again MINI2 is the best place to get the factual information
I told my dealer last week that I'd be popping in tomorrow to say Hi and see if there was any news. I bet they won't know anything. (Unless they've read MINI2, that is)!
I can't believe a dealer thinks they have been allocated one...they are not even official yet. BMW do not run allocations till production numbers and dates are known. So, unless it is official and we all just don't know yet and all other dealers have not been told, then I think this is a "garden path" story...
Just repeating what the dealer told me. And FYI spoke to him again this am and was told the same thing: one car allocated and it will have every JCW piece known to man as well as cf bits. It will be "very expensive, £30K" and the "allocated" example has a name against it with, so far, no deposit. Yes, I believe that 'unofficial sources' such as those serving this site are aware of more details/more accurate details than that but I a also believe this dealer has an allocation. What makes you certain that production numbers and dates have NOT been decided yet by BMW?
Maybe they have...and that would make sense for your dealer story...I just know other dealers (including ones with Mini factory contacts) do not seem to know anything. I am usually told prior to anything official (i.e. as soon as the dealer knows) as I have pre-ordered several cars before (my last being the new M5) with one of the largest dealer groups.
I am also slightly sceptical that they have allocated the car but with no deposit...then you could get another salesperson potentially allocating the slot if it is big dealership. I have placed a deposit so if the dealer does get an allocation I will be the first...but I shall wait and see. If numbers are limited to 2,000 globally and say 120 come to the UK (pure guess - may be much higher if not US marketed) then there is less than one car per dealer. To pre-allocate with no deposit does not seem to match this scenario.
This is only my 2p's worth - and BMW could have already worked out global production numbers, country allocations and dealer allocations within each country...but that does seem a bit too organised for them at this early stage!
I'm just passing on what I have been told - for what it is worth - in good faith. I hear what you say about allocation procedures but this could well be somewhat different. In ordinary circumstances, I presume it is fair to say that, every MINI is to some extent 'pre-ordered,' either by the dealer for stock or to meet a customer's specific requirement and the units are individually manufactured to an unique production number. In this case - according to all reports - BMW have sub-contracted much of the work to Bertone as a batch. Therefore, it is quite conceivable that they have allocated (pre-sold) a finite number of units already. Again, according to reports, the Lightweight will be unveiled at Misano at the end of the month. BMW will be aware that they will be able, immediately, to sell far more than are rumoured to be in the batch. Therefore, it is likely that they will have planned by now where the units will go. All this is common sense speculation - nothing more nor less - and, as a mere customer and motorist, I've personally nothing further to add or debate.
I hear what you say. I am not trying to be confrontational at all - more an interest in differing dealer knowledge! If my dealer doesn't know what is going on, I want to know why! I shall of course be asking for an update - and will post any news (or lack of)
