With the way the market is these days here, I don't know if I'd want any of that action.

However, an LW would be too cool. One of my fave autos of all time has to be the e36 M3 light weight. One of the best track cars you could actually buy:

I doubt if the lightweight version will be available in the U.S., since the number of the vehicles like this will be small. It would have to start over in the emissions testing, as well as the safety testing. This requires several donor cars, as well as a lot of money and time. I wish it would, as I would like to have one. I don't see it happening though.

However the big problem comes from individual nations and their safety ratings. You WILL find that CF panelling is illegal in most countries as it is hazardous in an impact. This is especially so with exterior and main body panelling.
Also, in most nations, you will need proper certificates for those windows as well as other parts they would (I would imagine) hope to substitute for.
I have an extremely lightweight MCS with custom CF panels interior exterior etc as well as aerodynamic parts. After all that and other lightweight tactics I have done, I can say that a lightweight version will NOT sell to the average MCS driver as the ride would be very loud, very rough and very uncomfortable. For the racer in us all, there maybe some who would want that but then again it points to my first statement regarding development costs.....Dont think its gonna happen guys!

Silly thing is, they probably (if it ever eventuated) would still have the heavy back seats, heavy JCW seats, heavy battery, heavy runflats, AC, Radio etc.

Anyone wants lightweight, drop me a PM and I'll tell you how to do it to your OWN MCS......might cost a bit though

Based on the fact that Mini2 news is rarely incorrect I think you'll be proven wrong.... it sounds like mini have invested a lot of money in this special so far, they wouldnt be doing it if it wont pass the regulations in the countries it plans to sell it.

so are JCW going to be building it? sound to me like its going to be in the £25k-£30k bracket, bearing in mind the cost of a JCW MCS currently. could it be they are building it with a view to homologation so they can go racing beyond the JCW Cup? maybe get back in to Rallying?

They've gone a long way (from what I've heard) to turn back now.

(Marged the two threads into one in Future Variants).

I should add that I don't KNOW if it's bound for the US or any other market, but the information I have gives no indication of this being for a specific market. I've got good information there's prototypes with 220+ bhp, however the Cooper S was in 200bhp form for a long time as a prototype, so I can't say what will come to market.

I have no reason to believe the light weight Cooper S will not happen, and every reason to believe it will.

I do not know what markets it will reach, but it looks as certain to happen at this stage as any other prediction we've made.

The only thing I can think I've ever predicted that didn't happen as I thought it would was the Se7en, Checkmate and Park Lane ltd editions which I predicted last year, but thought would be US only, but it seems they're just about everywhere else BUT the US, but I did get the details spot on. I'm not Auto Express, I have no need to print fantasy to sell copy.

I don't make things up, I have no reason to, I have no intention to start making up things just to get people interested, and I know and trust my sources and they've never let me down. They're also not official sources, so it's not to fuel interest in the brand or cars and editions that wont happen.

It might come to the US, it might not, I have no idea, but I'm as certain as I can be it will be released in the UK. Carbon Fibre may mean CSL style carbon fibre/plastic mix, but the CSL didn't make the US officially (I don't think), so maybe that's an indication this special S wont either, but I don't know.

Well said Paul.

BTW the original E36 M3 lightweight did make it to the US. Interestingly the 80 imported sold rather poorly.

excellant news this, i'm very tempted to get one, however, I may regret it when I see everyone driving around in the next generation Mini which, lets face it, will be a fantastic car considering how good the current model is
