We got our roof number!

Well, another deposit paid here (new members too!) we've had our MCS since Sept 2002 and 'tis time for a new one - we got roof number 1323, got a bit of a ring to it.

So, any word on an owners club?

Here is a good one for you.

Speaking to my dealer we got onto the subject of GP's and reselling. (Not that I have any intention of doing this!) Acording to MINI UK the dealers cannot buy GP's at above RRP or sell them above RRP - they would lose their franchise if they did this. So nobody should be able to make a quick buck selling back to MINI....

And the resellers do not seem to be having much luck with the three to six thousand pound markups that have been seen....

I think that nobody is going to have a feel for the real value of these cars for at least 12 to 18 months - even the dealers.

Good or bad though I dont care, im just in it for the fun factor....

Good residuals? You'd hope so. The interesting one is if anyone is unlucky enough to write one off. Normally the insurers will make you an offer based on the market value of the car (which typically works in their favour) I wonder how they'll react to a positive residual in 12 months time?

Well, there will be sufficient spares for at least 5 to 10 years , so a re shell and build from the ground up in worst case should be feasable, but hopefully these cars will be treated with reverence and taken care of, even in the worst case, you should get market value which will allow a purchase of a Cooper S works with JCW bits

Yet another here that's signed up and made the deposit.

Can't wait, but I'm starting to wonder when I'll be able to get it.

Got it in Florida, but since then moved back to California. I might be making the reverse Monterey Historics cross country trip.

Anyone care to join me? Can we get a MAXIM girl for company?

Cheers!

There are exceptions in CA...East Bay, South Bay, Long Beach...but they are few and far between.

For the GP, the closest MINI dealer was asking $5,000 over sticker!

When MINIUSA begins enforcing the original agreements not to sell MINIs over MSRP, then you see a decline in out of state/internet sales. Otherwise, it just makes financial sense to go outside of CA to buy a MINI...especially if you do a fly & drive to receive your car.

Most folks don't realize that you pay sales tax on the markup; and every year you register the car in CA, you're paying fees on that markup

I'm in this boat by accident. I got mine in Florida but since putting down my deposit ... I moved back to the Bay Area in CA.

Question for ya and I'm not sure if you know the answer...

When I pick up the car, I expect to pay FL taxes of about 6% (Broward county). When I hit CA and register the car, am I going to pay taxes again for the car being new? Double taxes?

Short of digging into this on my own, just wondering what to expect.

Any info would help.

DMV will sort it out when you register the car. At the very least, you will thave to pay registration fees of circa $300 for CA. Expect to pay the sales/use tax on the car--most likely the difference between the Broward rate & the rate in the county you're now living in. e.g. San Diego County is 7.75%, so you'd pay an additional 1.75% of the purchase price (including mark-up, if any!!!)

I could--because your car will be brand new--be wrong. You may be expected to pay the full sales tax. CA typically expects full sales tax on cars first registered for use in CA. Check with some of the CA owners who've bought out of state. Do a search on M2 & NAM for "out of state purchase". You'll get more info.

History: There are "loopholes" in CA law--it used to be you (as a CA resident) could register the vehicle out of state, leave it there for 90 days & then bring it in without paying the additional sales/use tax. I think they've expanded that window to a year. This was done in an effort to cut down on false out ot state registrations. OR & AZ registarations are (or were) so much cheaper than CA registration, that it made financial sense to do register out of state, then slide into CA down the line. I think it was partly due to the reg fees, but mostly because sales tax was so much less out of state.

(Meanwhile, Monterey bound GP owners are all wincing at the thought of use tax. )

You should be able to avoid registering the car in FL - get temporary tags from CA (if they exist) or just "borrow" the plates from another of your cars (assuming you have another).

Leave FL with no registration, and do the reg when you get back to CA.

Robert / LetsMotor did similar from MA to CA a while back ...

GBMini is correct...............dealer in Lauderdale should give you an MSO (Manufacture's Statement of Origin) that you can present to a tag agency when you get to the left coast.......they will collect tax at the local rate and subsequently send you a California title from the CA DMV. Should be no need to title the car in Florida. I'm getting mine from Georgia and will do the same process to title it in Florida.
