Grr :Ticking MCS works...questions, safe to drive etc

my new motor has developed yet another snag after 400 miles...this one i'm worried about. Its going into the dealer next thursday but in the meantime...its developed a loud ticking noise, which is related to engine speed and doesnt dissapear when the clutch is dipped etc. Looking under the bonnet it seems to be coming from the belt area left hand side (looking into the bonnet).

So is this something bad enough to stop me driving it for 3-4 days do you reckon?

i wouldnt say it gets worse...its not much louder (difficult to tell really)...but it is faster.

at idle i reckon its something like 5-10 ticks a second and that rises proportionatly with revs.

after reading that thread i'm 95% certain its the harmonic dampner that keeps being mentioned...i assume thats not dangerous to drive for 50 or so miles over the next few days?

I had the same problem (01 mini cooper), ticking noise, got faster when engine speed is up, but not really louder. I found out what it was, on my car the wheel that the belt drives underneath the alternator, was shaking a bit. The noise is gone now, because the wheel broke off and fell out from underneath my car yesterday while driving. Needless to say its going to the garage today...
