maybe a bigger intercooler on the S, Pat, if it runs a higher boost, possibly sat on top the block again, where as the coop turbo will run (I presume ) a lower boost, and may need a smaller I/c sat in the grille somewhere?? or maybe just a visual differentiation of the coop turbo and s??

yeah, seems like a lot of work & cost for a visual differentiation. if the difference in power is down to turbo boost will it be easier to take the cooper up to S power?

In simple terms, presuming there is only a difference in boost pressure, technically, it should be possible, I'd have thought - extra boost = higher induction air temp, which means a bigger intercooler would be required, along with a remap of the ecu - Id have thought the two would run fairly identical gearboxes/clutches etc Usual warranty problems though

It has been said that the Cooper will have 6spds and turbo producing 143bhp while the S will have 6spds and turbo producing 170bhp. So I am wondering what - apart from a puny 27bhp bonus and a bonnet scoop - will make the new S as different a model from the Cooper as it is in today's lineup.....?

You could argue they should call the Cooper the Cooper as that will cause confusion, and the One shouldn't be called the One, in fact when you say MINI people will be confused..... I can't see any reason not to call the new S an S.

Ok Paul, one last go on this
Maybe I'm thinking of Au mini construction where clubmans superceded roundnoses in production. Must of been different in UK. As I already said, the changes might confuse NON-MINI PEOPLE, and it seems many punters are confused between what is a turbo and what is a supercharger.
I doubt there'd be confusion for Cooper when it's just the straight donk. As is the One, which is not sold in Au. For these the year model identifies. Alternativly the S is "top shelf" and should not need any explaining. Thus I reckoned there is reason to rename. As for other reasons how about
Scenario 1: Five years from now your looking for a simple part for your supercharged MINI, and this green 18 year old parts interpretor opposite you at the counter swears that the Cooper S only came with a Turbo. You do sort it out, but now your late home.
Scenario 2: The turbo version is released but the market decides its a pig. To them it's just another car. By association maybe this would effect resale value of your supercharged mini? But with distinguishing naming could yours become a collectable after it's production ended?

Simply put, call the 2k7 Mini whatever you fancy, just like all birds are called birds. Descriptivly however, one might be an ostrich and the other an emu because there are real differences in design, even though they are the "same'.
GT was just first thought

The Golf GTI has survived 30 years and 5 generations.
These days, all cars are facelifted and have model year updates, well, yearly!!
If in doubt, take your car papers with you where the VIN number identifies the car.

BMW markets the car on its conceptual heritage - which is why it's called 'Mini' as well as 'Cooper' and 'S' - names linked to Mini's since the 60's - that won't change now

if this talk continues we'll have 3 groups of mini owners, the classics, the early 2000's and the 2007 onwards all hating one another sniping...hehe

everybody knows they will love it when its released...look at the golf...the model out before this one was gorgeous the R32 ... its unbelievable...then they brought the new golf out...seen the adverts and I was like gross wtf have they dun to it ruined a master peice....then I see the GTI's and that and I cant get enuff its looks sexy.

Again the same with the astra, the astra gsi 2002 edition is again gorgeous...they brought out the new astra at first i thought gross once again then out comes the VXR and its again feckin bootiful.

I know im talking about the top end model cars but every mini is basically a top end model. I cant wait for it to be released cuz you know they ent telling us the full story and when its launched there is going to be so many gadgets...little tweaks here and there. We will all own one...although I might buy an 06 S and hit these pedestrians with the scoop and watch them get there arms trapped cuz its down to them its going....stupid crash test dummies...if they had to use real humans they wud of never knew

I've just seen the photo at the beginning of this thread. It's quite interesting however, I doubt that any of these is the final 2007 MINI. If you look close enough, you'll notice at least three completely different grille treatments. The one with the open bonnet seems to have a grille similar to current MINIs, whereas the one next to it and the one on the far right have deeper, more aggressive looking ones.

One more thing: I agree with those who prefer the current clamshell bonnet!
