Lower the Lid!

Having been the proud owner of an MCS for a week now, I have one suggestion for future designs of the MINI...

Lower the roofline a bit!

I'm 5'10" tall and have at least 6" of headroom in the car with the seat at my comfortable setting.

I began noticing that the MINI, when viewed head-on from a distance, looked a bit tall or possibly top-heavy.

Don't get me wrong, I love everything about the car, but I feel that it would be more true to the classic Mini if you could see the entire Union Jack at any perspective.

This sample has about 2 inches lopped off.

Evolution or devolution? The last image on the right above is starting to look a lot like a classic Mini.

(Which is really cool by me! )

Evolution or Devolution...it's all in your personal perspective. Read the original thread above...

here's another thought:

I followed a Z3 coupe one day and from the rear, straight-on, that is close to the height that would be more accurate to the original Mini. Just a thought...check it out.

Thumbs down Lower Roof???

While lowering the roof would look great, I am happy just the way it is now. I'm 6'4" and those 2" make a world of difference. The MINI is the first new/small car that I have been able to drive and not feel like I needed to use a shoe horn to get into the car.

looks a bit like the original idea for the MiniSprint (lowered roofline etc)
Perhaps someone will resurect Rob Walkers ideas from the original MiniSprint from the mid 60's, and apply it to the latest offering.
It'd be interesting to see what it'd look like from the front, as you don't want it to look too squat (as if it had been troden on).

Well... having only sat in my friends MCS briefly, I can safely say that the roofline is perfect (I'm also 5'10") if you need to wear a helmet in the car (which my buddy and I will likely need to do ).

Sorry Basil...but because of the size limitations here, I downsized it and did not save it in it's original size.
I'll redo it as soon as possible.

PS: Thanks for the larger photo tip on your "New Wallpaper" thread.

Chopped and lowered! Like an old American street rod.

Hi,

I'm currently working on a dropped roof, and shortened MINI. I've found if you drop the roof, by anything from 2 - 5 inches, you get this long wheel based MINI which looks a bit pants.

I've read of people talking about an "M-MINI", which should damn well be called the "M-COOPER" (my opinion!!!), so as per my previos post am designing one as we speak.

I've dropped the roof down a fair few inches, and also shortened it a bit. All will be revealed on Friday.

Simon.

I'll look forward to it...when you say that you're working on this, are you working on a design for one or are you actually cutting a car?

I have chopped the roof pillars on this one plus I chopped about three inches on the body height and chopped it twice lengthwise at the middle of the rear side window and the front side window. Then I added to the bottom of the front spoiler and the bottom panel between the front and rear wheel.

Good Luck!

Its a design rather than an actualy trim and cut. I'm about to order my cooper and there is nooooo way i'm cutting it at all. Its really cool with the latest graphics programs to see what different sizes the MINI looks good in.

When i was a member of the SMOC, John (Mini Shortie owner), brought me back from Mini 40 at Silverstone. You would not believe the looks we got on the Motorway on the way back it was brilliant. I liked the idea of his shortened Mini, but long term, i don't think i could do it myself.

So, designed "M-Cooper" is due Friday.

Its cool. BMW take note.

BTW, saw this great number plate on a 3-series today:

"OK 02 BMW"

Sweeeeeeet.

Very cool, Simon...I look forward to seeing your M-Cooper.

In the meantime, here is the above "devo" side-by-side with the actual car for comparison.
