Bit of an odd choice (although internally it's always been called that), because the Clubman was a new front end, not a new back end. But there you go.

Wonder what they could do to make it more Cortina like?

I have to agree, with ""Traveller" and "Countryman" to choose from, choosing the name "Clubman" is completely bizarre!

Unless they are planning to put a square front end on at the last moment

Tigger.

It's why I thought I'd add the little history lesson to be honest, as I think if MINI are going to raid the archives for their names then people should know a little about where they come from.

My name is down on the list for now - until I see more details at least.

I really had no idea that the Clubman was designed by the same person that did the MKII Cortina but, now you mention it, it couldn't be any more obvious!

Tigger.

I thought it was designated clubman simply because the traveler and countryman name not being owned by BMW.

Does seem a bit odd, but at least it is a familiar name to a lot of people.

cool, personally i think its the right name.

having looked into some more history it appears The Mini Clubman's finest hour came in 1978 and 1979 when a 1275GT driven by Richard Longman won the British Touring car championship.

it would be interesting to see the new one do that, a pit stop, would involve tea and sandwiches first

I think traveller would have been a more logical name although I note the copyright issues on that one. Interesting bit of Mini heritage above.

That'd be good.

think its a better name than a traveller (reminds me of pickeys that does lol) i got the concept book on this from the motorshow, thinking of flogging it if i can get my money back as i dont like the look of it personally.

Put pictures of them side by side and see if you still think so.

Check, for instance:

The curved front window (necessitating a new bulkhead; the old one was eventually carried over)
The huge cantilever doors
The lack of B pillars
The opening rear side windows
The curved metal sills and wheel arches with small plastic extensions

I'm guessing that the concept is what the designers wanted and the finished object is what the production engineers and accountants could agree on.

Okay, so most concept cars are watered down for production, although the concept MINI shown in 1997 (based on a FIAT platform) hardly changed at all before launch in 2001

Tigger.
