New MINI Metro

Taken from Pistonheads News section:

Quote:
Mini is planning a replacement for the Metro, it has been revealed.

In the hands of BMW the Mini has spawned a number of different variants - a convertible, the forthcoming SUV crossover and the Clubman – but now the firm is looking to add a fifth.

Codenamed ‘Knightsbridge’, the new car is reportedly going to be a larger version of the Mini - not as long as the Clubman but with more interior space than the current Mini.

According to website minitreiber.com, company insiders want to call the car ‘Metro’ after the roomier Mini successor. It could use the same floor pan as the Mini but a larger body will allow for more interior space.

The car could use diesel, hybrid and ethanol/hydrogen technology. It is even suggested that BMW will look to acquire the MG name so that they can use it for sportier versions of the new car, which is expected in 2011.

A ‘Metro Turbo’ would use the same turbocharged 1.6 as in the Mini Cooper. Minitreiber.com quoted BMW insider Jan Witz as saying: ‘The Metro may be something of a joke in the UK but in Europe the car is held in high regard.

‘We are keen to stay true to the original – but obviously without the chronic rust problems.’
If all goes well BMW bosses say they could also look to develop a new Montego based on the 3-Series, and a Maestro on the 3-Series Compact platform.

Not that one.... but only because I learnt how birds fly at uni.
As for cars, well, someone could post a concept for a lorry called optimus prime that transforms into a robot and it might take me 5 minutes to figure out that something doesn't quite add up....

Ah damn, it was an April Fool? That would of been an interesting car if it was built - my first car was a Metro, and I loved it

I actually liked the original G & H reg MG (different seats & colour coded etc...), not sure why they were crap!!!!, it also had a notchy gearbox like the MINIs , while underneath trying to adjust the linkage with the biggest adjustable spanner that I've ever seen / had (all I had at the time), it slipped off smacked me in the teeth and chipped a tooth, almost lost my two front teeth

Never had one since .

Mine's the one on the left.

H reg burgandy Metro, 1.0 litre! My first car and it was in perfect nick...until the floor rusted through (after the door hinge fell apart and the whole radiator system failed). Apart from that, it was a great car with some great memories

The ONLY Metro worth having was the MG Metro 6r4 - and that had rather more in common with a Williams Formula 1 car than anything coming off the production line at Longbridge.
