The odd thing is that the turbo diesel will be a more state-of-the-art design than the South American-sourced petrol engine, about which one CARkeys reader has recently been quite scathing.

It's interesting to repeatedly read criticisms of the Tritec engine, even though it's one of the few components of the MINI that's been trouble-free (ECU problems don't count). Granted, it lacks the more sophisticated engineering found on BMW and Toyota engines, but so what?

The jury is still out.

I'd be very surprised if you don't see a diesel MINI in the states...but remember 2003 is the UK release date, America may well lag behind.

With petrol at about 22p a liter in the US, there just isn't much call for diesels here.

Mercedes sells a few diesels to a long-time loyal following, and VW offer diesels as an option in the Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle lines. But that is it for diesel cars in the US.

Based upon the fact that no BMW diesels are sold here I doubt a diesel MINI will ever be imported.

Well, maybe a little help is on the way. It looks like Brussels may cause the UK to cut the very high taxes it places on diesel so as to bring diesel fuel prices in line with the rest of the EU.

Diesel fuel was cheaper than gasoline in the U.S. until the 1980's and now it costs between regular and premium. Our #2 fuel is higher in sulfur than in Europe, and we have fewer service stations selling it.

It has its following -- not just for some imports, but many full-size domestic pickups (5th wheels) and all Hummers are diesel-powered.

If performance improves, and particulants (soot) are addressed, diesels will be be back in a big way.

it would also be smart of BMW/Mini to put the diesel into the Mini here as it would allow them to get a (theoretically) younger audience interested in diesel powertrains, which would then be a natural progression into putting them into BMW's as well.

Ford have noted that they are investigating sale of the TCDi Focus here in the States & I'm sure that if it were to prove successful use of diesel would expand.

availability of low-sulfur fuels (at higher cost to the refiners & consumers) is the largest barrier to wider sales here I believe, along with general market apathy. Mercedes will be bringing back disels in the newly introduced E-class here, having heard back from their customers in a negative fashion during the past generation's life, which didn't include a diesel for our market.

It won't happen in Australia either as we don't have Diesel available at many petrol stations(gas stations). We only just got to the point where 90% of our stations supply Premium and finally have phased out leaded fuel, the new "lead replacement" fuel destroys some rubber parts in cars not sure what but I have heard it kills the old Minis.

Anyway the point is, our market doesn't like diesel despite the obvious benifits, after all theres a sick obsesion with petrol drinking V8s here. My mates give me crap for my Honda now. at least they can't call my MINI a Rice cooker

The cleaner Diesel is for North America only. North American crude supplies are high in sulpher. Arabic and eastern supplies don't require removal of sulpher because of the low amount present in the crude. Canada started producing low sulpher diesel for a while now.
