Offline | Brand New Mini - Clutch Noise 55 reg Mini one, makes a clunk noise when the clutch is pressed and released, doesn't happen when the engine is off but only when the engine is on. Is this normal, my dealer say's it is! I'm a little confused, can you help? Does your Mini clunk when you press the clutch, it is not a very loud noise but it is noticable when the music is off. Cheers |

Offline | My one can make this noise, but you can drive around it,. I find using at least 1500 rpm when moving away from rest and releasing the clutch slowly and smoothly will avoid the clunk. It doesn't make the noise when on the move and lets face it we don't sit and standstill and operate the clutch pedal so I wouldn't worry too much. For the record my March 2004 one now has 22,500 miles on the clock and it hasn't got any worse than when new. ![]() |

Offline | All post facelift (model year 2005 and onwards) One's and Coopers are likely to exhibt this clutch noise to some extent. BMW had to find a replacement for the Midlands (Rover) box used in pre MY 2005 cars when Rover decided to close the Midlands production facility. Seemingly they did not do a very good job of integrating the Getrag five speed box they chose. Discussion elsewhere on this board has focussed around the clutch thrust bearing. Other members have reported that BMW have issued tighter tolerance guides for fitting the clutch assembly, but that this doesn't help much. Cooper S and diesel models aren't affected as they use the Getrag 6 speed box. Publicly BMW's attitude is that the noise is 'not a problem'. No one knows yet whether it may mean bigger problems as the 2005 MY cars start to clock up higher mileages. It is a bit dissapointing, especially when combined with the increased cog chatter noise (thinner gearbox oil to meet emissons regs in Europe) and the lack of syncromesh on reverse. |

Offline | I read somewhere (probably on this forum) that if you put it into 1st gear before selecting reverse that helps. It seems to help in my Cooper but now it has 1400 miles on the clock the gearbox does seem alot smoother. I must admit that my Mini does crunch into reverse sometimes and no ... it is not me doing it! If you are dissatisfied or feel it is a problem, just go back to your dealer and let them have a listen. |

Offline | There is a very slight clunk in my 05 Mini Cooper with Getrag as well. I'm not really bothered, it hasn't gotten any louder, and the clutch doesn't feel any different after 5000kms. After I installed the Remus dual exhaust on my Cooper I can't really heard the clutch "clunk" that well anymore It was really a minor thing to begin with anyway. |

Offline | What he says basically. Mine is the same. I must admit though, after moaning quite a bit at first, now that the car has covered nearly 4000 miles the gearbox is breaking-in quite nicely and the action become 'slicker'. The clunking still exists, but I've mastered ways of minimising it whilst driving. I find that the clunking occurs more when changing at low revs, for example around town etc. Letting the clutch out more slowly at these speeds seems to help. I still don't think it's acceptable for there to be any clunking but only time will tell if its causing any long term problems... |
