Between 6 June and 25 July 2002, the Queen's Jubilee Baton will be passing through more than 500 cities, towns and villages across the British Isles. Prior to this, the baton completes an 85-day tour of 23 Commonwealth countries. The Baton will be carried by 5,000 individuals each covering up to 500 yards. The runners are from all walks of life including athletes, celebrities and local heroes from all over the country.
The Queen's Baton is as much a part of the Commonwealth Games tradition as the torch is part of the Olympics. The first Baton was made in 1958 for the Games held in Cardiff. For each Games, the host country designs a unique Baton which carries a message from The Queen across the Commonwealth, to be read aloud at the Opening Ceremony, greeting athletes and visitors and officially announcing the start of the competitions.
