Here is a thread on warrenties in general discussion started on June17 2005.

http://www.mini2.com/forum/finance-insurance/93906-warrenty-1-year-4-500-a.html

Below was my three halfpennies worth from that post.

A number of motoring sites here in the UK highly recommend Warranty Direct.
Loads of positive reviews noted.
The sister site of WD in the US is also recommended by the North American Motoring, a Mini dedicated site – Forums – Extended Mini warranty discussion.

Looking at the small print on the BMW policy it states that the warranty is underwritten by an insurance company and also includes a wear and tear disclaimer.

Warranty Direct’s Gold policy appears very much identical.
The recovery and roadside repair appears to cover only for items covered by the policy. Note, not for breakdowns due to serviceable items etc. like flat batteries, fan belts, punctures etc etc.
Pretty understandable, not sure if BMW policy covers for this in its Emergency Service cover part of the package, most likely does.

Bottom line – Got an online quote from Warranty Direct of £260 for a year.
Rung them up to ask a couple of questions and was immediately offered other deals.

Order today and get the Gold package for £210 plus: an extra month free plus: pay in three instalments with no interest charges plus: repair at a BMW Mini main dealer plus London BMW labour charges plus: for an extra £50, a years membership of their Green Flag based breakdown service – Star Recovery Plus with European cover.
The policy covers the car for any driver.

No contest actually, though I would give it a go seeing I was going to fork out £129 anyway just for the BMW Mondial based Emergency Service only.

For £260 both my wife and I are covered for any breakdown home or away plus the car parts are covered for cost and labour for 13 months.

We’ll see how we go.

I agree absolutley with the above.

"MINI me" has has a new cooling fan and thermostat, a power steering pump and an alternator and battery (£700 for the last incident at BMW prices) all under MINI extended warrenty and I only got it in case the CVT belt snapped! Last year it was £390 (£130 Recovery + £260 Warrenty). If I wasn't changing it would be £500 this year and in my experience it's more a reluctant but necassary ransom rather than peace of mind payment! Which I made BMW customer services aware of and no I didn't get any sympathy but there was recognition of 01/02 teething troubles!. Does your alternative cover really cover you?

Sorry to be negative but I really feel that I "unfortunatley" got my money's worth out of my BMW/MINI cover this year during the above three incidents that took me off the road with no quibbles.

well from what i understand this gold cover from the warranties direct dose off the same neraly protection as mini for less as if you read the fine print on the mini warranty there (clutch plate flywheels ect) that are parts the yes do go fulaty but in time and milage wear away and for me the chioce is fundamental i cannot afford the warranty extension form bmw as they both forms of insurance from the cheep one you by direct from the borker from the mini you pay a lot for the pleasure of the doing that

Although my car is technically too old (normally a 2 year limit) I persuaded Warranty Direct to put me on their 'Platinum' scheme due to my very low mileage. This is defined by a short list of things they don't cover, rather than a long list that they do and even includes contributions to wear and tear items... £220 for a year's peace of mind wasn't too bad I thought.

They've also been incredibly helpful in my dealings with them - they called me a couple of days after I obtained a quote via their website and while obviously looking for a sale, achieved it through a fairly hefty reduction in premium and good service, not pressure sales techniques.

BMW dealers do NOT carry out work & claim through ANY 3rd party warranty except BMW Extended Warranty.
They will however carry the work out & get you to pay for it. Getting you to claim the money back through the 3rd party warranty.
To be honest, the 3rd party warranty will say / do anyhting to not pay up. So I guess Max is right in what he says..... You pay less, you get less
