I don't know of anyone having to replace it. Sure it's not the bulb or fuse?

If you do need to replace the switch it's number 12 in this diagram here. Part number is also on there.

It was acceptable in the 80's

on manual tranny there is a switch for reverse light. i belive mini has a fault, can see any fuses gone in the box in footwell of car, and iv replaced the bulb. so it must be the switch.?

is it just a unbolt old one and re bolt new one?

It's not a light on top of the gearbox. It's a switch in the manual gearbox that activates the reverse light when you put the car into reverse.

Yes it just screws in. It's detailed in the Haynes manual if you want to pick one up. Or have a quick flick through one. Page 7.4

Mine have been replaced three weeks ago. I left the car for installing the aero spoiler on it so they did it the swich replacment for me. I dont know if its a DIY but they charge me 27€ (20pounds).

Looking at the Haynes manual it's a simple DIY job. Not sure how much the switch would cost though.
