Unhappy My '04 Mini *CRASHED* w/ Photos of the Carnage (56k Beware)

Around 3AM Friday morning, I was turning left at an intersection after receiving my green light. As I was pulling out into the intersection, I start to see something I should not be seeing.. a car coming from where no car should be, and not slowing down. I didn't have enough time to react. Someone driving the wrong way on a 2 lane highway (2 lanes one way, two lanes the other way, seperated by a big grassy median) ran through the red light doing around 70 MPH in an SUV, and hit my poor little Mini Cooper, without even braking. Since she was on the wrong side of the highway, she did not see the red traffic light because she was seeing the rear of the ones intended for vehicles driving in the opposite direction.

After the impact, my car spun completely around and into a guard rail VERY hard. Luckily I was wearing my seatbelt, otherwise I probably wouldn't be posting this message, or if I was, It'd be from a hospital bed instead of my home. I'm fine, just very very sore, especially my neck and my chest. More than anything, I'm ****ed off that I no longer have my car because I was very proud of it, and loved driving it. It was the first new car I ever bought, and I bought it at 20 years old with my own cash.

The other driver was fine as well, but she is apparently getting citations for the crash.. and on top of that, she was driving a rental car.

I don't understand how the hell she could have possibly been driving down the wrong side of the highway and not realized it considering the stretch of road is almost 3 miles long from where she had to have got on the road, and she MUST have been seeing all the backwards exit signs along the road, and the highway lanes across the median to her right... She must have thought she was in the U.K. with some of you folks!

So, anyone want to convince me to buy an '06 Mini if the insurance company considers this car totaled? I will post more pictures later, I am going to go to the tow lot to see the car and take LOTS of pictures.

Yikes, omg..........

Glad you are alright, thats always most important.

Seeing how the little MINI stood up to an SUV, why would you buy anything else to replace it ?

Our water is shut off outside during the winter to keep the pipes from freezing, so I don't clean them during the winter time. Wouldn't have done me much good anyway at this rate, hah

Ooh ouch Glad to hear you're ok though. The way your MINI stood up to the impact is a great testament to its safety.

OMG - That's horrible EvilN8

I know everyone is saying it and I'm the first to say 'no, it's not just a car!!!' but looking at that mess - you're so lucky to be at home with minor injuries.

I hope it all gets sorted out for you soon x

Wow, glad you got away with only a few sore muscles.

Also glad that she is going to be prosecuted!

Without doubt get another Mini - I think being able to walk away from a crash like that is testiment to how good these little cars are - No question in my mind.

Would be interested in what you do decide to do...

Jeeezzzzzuuuuus effin crist!!!!! Sorry to see and hear that. Glad your OK....not as much damage as I thought there was going to be when you said "SUV" and "Didn't Brake"....madness. Hope you feel less battered in a day or two...Its not so bad after a couple of days but the cricked nick stays for about 1-2 weeks...it did with me.

Get a replacement secondhand S....its the best form of recooperation treatment...it worked for me!

Yeah, I am surprised too. Luckily for me, she hit the passenger side front corner, which spun me, instead of the passenger side door, which probably would have flipped me. The spin had enough energy to put a huge dent in the guard rail, and puncture the rear of the car until the rail was touching the gas tank. I don't think the picture shows it well, but the rear wheel was literally at 130 degree angle. Here is a picture of the woman's Ford Explorer...

Her left front tire was eaten up by my Mini, and was stuck under the car. There was a tire skid on the road following the path of my car all the way to the guard rail, with her tire!

well, glad to hear you're OK after that, as an '04 owner, I'd definately get an '06. The improved gear ratios, LSD option, and other things would make it an easy decision. 'course, not having Ian's auto-up window circuit might hold me back tho' LOL
