Unleaded V Super Unleaded/Ultimax/Optimax

Hey everyone,
Whats the difference supposed to be between unleaded and super unleaded? Thought I'd give super unleaded a try this weekend as i heard its supposed to improve performance. Didn't notice too much of a difference and ive seen it on sale for 99.9 in banbury when at the same petrol station unleaded was 90.9!. Seems like a big difference in price for a minimal difference in performance.

Most of the motoring mags have run something on this topic over the last few months and over all they all come down to say that you will notice a difference in the performance of your car. You can expect better fuel consuption and power by using high octane fuel. That said it will depend on your particular car and the way it is set up. As for when I go to a track day I would always make sure I had been running Optimax for the previous week and on the day. Does it make a difference? Well I don't know but I feel better for putting the expensive stuff in just in case!!!

Just done a comparison on leaded and Optimax, MCS is more responsive through the gears and the Optimax has got rid of the flat spot around 4K RPM. Will be filling up with Optimax from now on. Unsure about the extra mpg but drive around town mostly so havent really noticed a difference but when on open road car is definately quicker and more fun to drive.

Cool Super all the way

I've always put super unleaded in my MCS since I got it in June 05. The Price of Optimax puts me off a little so I usually put Sainsburys Super in, until the last month or so, it was the same price as normal unleaded, its 2p more now though, still only 88.9p though, which doesn't sound to bad compared to cooper86's 99.9p!? I try and put optimax in every 3 or 4 fills to give a bit of a clean through and feel it does make a difference, mpg goes up slightly, but by less than 1mpg. And like Toot Toot said it does smooth out the power. Certainly worth giving it a try and see how you get on!

Dealer here in Germany told me Super Unleaded not Premium. So, super it is.... Runs fine for me and saves me a dime.

I run a Mini One and performance and fuel economy is defiantly better using Super against standard if anyone is not noticing the difference in performance then they must be in heavy traffic all the time or driving their Mini like a Granny

After running decent fuels in my car for way over 6mths now ive always wondered if there really is that much difference? Ive always been using Tesco99 with the occasional trip to a Shell garage for some Optimax (now V-Power)

Last week I got caught out near on empty and had to stick some normal unleaded in..........Can I tell the difference? My word yes the car feels like it's running like a bag of nails to be honest! Switching back the other way you can clearly notice the difference!

I agree going from normal unleaded to the likes of v power and bp ultimate seems like it's only making a small difference but as soon as you revert back it runs like s***e v-power all the way it's the stella artois of the petrol world

At BP yesterday I noticed some "Ultimate 102" (or something like that) that's £2.40 a litre!! Anyone know anything about this?

*thinks that BP website probably has some info*
*has a look before hitting submit*

OK, have a look here. Might be of interest to anyone here who goes to track days with a tuned MINI...

If V-power's the Stella of the petrol world, this stuff must be absinthe!

A quick search for BP 102 reveals all

http://www.mini2.com/forum/engine-dr...ghlight=BP+102

Its expensive stuff, £120 quid to fill a MINI is just ridiculous!

Definitely it sounds like rocket fuel might have to dry a drop of the old ultimate 102 see if it really does the business

From everything I have read about fuels it wont make any difference to performance unless the engine has been mapped to that RON. I read the JCW was mapped to Optimax (98 RON) so V-Power wont make any difference. I certainly didnt notice any difference on the weekend running V-Power over my usual BP Ultimate. Mechanic told me the car would just retard the ignition with higher RON fuel.

Would be interesting to get dual maps, one for 99 V-Power and 102 BP Ultimate. Switch to the 102 map and see if it really makes a difference.

The MINI has an adaptive ECU that will adjust air mixtures depending on the fuel you use.

This ensures that MINIs sold in countries with lower quality fuel can run without a problem.

Put 99 RON in your MINI instead of regular 95 and it will think Christmas has come early! Then it will adapt all the fuel/air levels to suit and make the most of it!
