Illinois Sales Tax

To all MINI potential buyers(or already bought) in Illinois:

I went to the IL Secretary of State website & found this this section on the sales tax for "Vehicles Purchased in Illinois" :

http://www.sos.state.il.us/publicati...license_plates

It says there that
"* separate payments for title/license plate fees and sales tax on the vehicle. The sales tax will vary depending on the city or county where you buy the vehicle."

Does anyone actually pay their sales tax based on their "residency" or to the location of the dealer???

I think that in most states you pay based on where you register the vehicle, indeed, you actually pay when you register the vehicle. Here in the Washington DC area, there are dealers in all three jurististions - VA,DC,MD and the dealer handles the paper work to register (and pay the tax) in the juristiction where you live, not where you buy.

Of course, each one can have a different tax, and if you live in a city where there is a sales tax both for the town and the state, you pay.

In North Carolina you pay a 3% Highway Use Tax. From the NC DMV site:
Quote:
North Carolina collects a 3% Highway Use Tax on vehicles in lieu of a state sales tax (General Statute 105-187.2). The tax is assessed each time a title is transferred. The maximum tax for commercial vehicles (vehicles with a weight greater than 26,000 pounds) is $1,000.00. All other vehicles are charged 3% with no ceiling.
If the vehicle is purchased from a Dealer or a Leasing Company, the tax is 3% of the purchase price, less any trade in credit. A bill of sale must accompany each application. Vehicles purchased from anyone other than a dealer must pay a 3% tax based on the vehicle's value according to a value table maintained by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.

You don't pay any city/county sales tax on the purchase. But you will pay Personal Property Tax on it, starting approximately three months later. The amount of the personal property tax varies in accordance with the rates set by your county & city. This money typically goes for local welfare programs, school system, & pay off construction bonds.

At our dealership, we charge tax based on where the vehicle is registered.

Having purchased many a car in the great state of IL, I can say with confidence that the sales tax that you must pay the state is calculated based upon the prevailing rate at the location of registration. If you buy a car from an Illinois-based dealer, they will calculate the appropriate tax based upon the address to be put on the Title paperwork, which is where your car will be registered. If you purchase a car from an out of state dealer (i.e. in my case, Missouri) the dealer will typically not collect the tax, but when you go to get the license plates from the Secretary of State's office, you'll have to fill out a application for title and registration, and write them a big check for Sales Tax. They will base the tax rate calculation on where you live.

Believe me, I've done it several times and it never gets any better.
