Post Car Programming

I took my MINI in to be programmed on Friday. I had the normal list of things I wanted, including auto door locks, daytime running lights, comfort opening, speed dependant wipers, etc. The technician had to call the mothership to find out how to program the DRL, and when he set that option it reset all the others to the default. I noticed the comfort opening didn't work, and had that reprogrammed right away, but am going to have to make a return trip.

But I did find out one bit of information I haven't heard before: There is a new comfort opening setting that is not implemented yet. If you want to open both windows and sunroof from inside the car, hold the 'lock' toggle for 5 seconds. I can see where this would be useful if you were driving alone. The service advisor let me see the write up in the service manual. I think it may be in the 2003 model cars.

Copied from page 41 in the owner's manual...

Doubtless you have often reflected on how
great it would be if you could configure
your vehicle's various adjustment settings
to meet your own personal requirements.
In developing this vehicle, the manufac-
turer has incorporated a number of options
that your MINI center can program to
reflect your individual preferences.
What the system can do
Your MINI center can provide you with
details on the capabilities of the Vehicle
Memory system.
Examples for Vehicle Memory:
>Signals an acknowledgement when
locking or unlocking your vehicle
>Automatic locking after starting off
>Automatic unlocking when the parking
brake is applied
>Selective central locking
First open the driver's door, then the
whole car
>Automatic opening/closing of sliding/tilt
sunroof
>Opening/closing windows and/or
sliding/tilt sunroof via remote control
>Speed-dependent windshield wiper
>Automatic activation of windshield
wipers on cleaning
>"Follow me home" lamps
Low beams light up for a short time after
the engine has been switched off
>Locking when engine is running (with
second key)
>Stop function of power windows on
opening/closing
>Activating/deactivating daytime driving
lamps*
>Switching on interior lamps via remote
control.
This symbol draws your attention to
other Vehicle Memory functions
described in the Owner's Manual.<

On a related thought, I was very disapointed with my dealer's handling of programming options. The topic only came up because I asked about it and the saleswoman wrote my requests on a scrap of paper. There was no standard form they went through with me and I would have been given no options if I had not asked.

This is not a big deal for owners who live close to their dealers but is a BIG problem when you have a 6 hour round-trip like I have. I have just e-mailed miniusa about this - there really should be a standard form that buyers fill in where they select their choices so everything gets done before they take delivery. This is how it worked when I bought a BMW and I was surprised how casually it was handled at MINI. I ended up with only half of my requests set up so I am not sure if the saleswoman's paper ever got handed in.

Am I the only one who got this e-mail?? this is from a few weeks ago & links to a page at MINIUSA where you can pick what things you want programmed & the dealer will set it for you before you pick up the car.

Some pets look like their owners. MINIs, on the other hand, tend to think like their owners. The brake system with ABS, EBD and CBC anticipates your every move. The electronic throttle system responds instantly to your commands. Heck, your MINI will even turn up the volume of the stereo for you as you get going faster and road noise increases.

But that's just the beginning. Click the link below and we'll program your MINI to know your every whim by the time you pick it up.

- Pick out a complimentary CD and tell us your 6 favorite radio stations so your MINI will have your favorite music ready and waiting.

- Let us know when your MINI should lock and unlock the doors for you.

- Tell us when you'd like your MINI to shine its big, beautiful headlamps on the world.

I just tried the link from my e-mail & it comes up with an error, saying I have already registered, so the link is tied to my specific MINI. You can try this though & see what happens...

No luck...
ERROR: To access the "Mind Meld With Your MINI" form, you'll need to link in via the email you received.

Since we didn't receive the email we can't fill out the form.
Ah, what a bummer. Maybe I will get one when my delivery gets closer?
Thanks anyway.

Tried the link, it gets me to the "mind meld with your mini" page, but then I get the same error as minicoopersgirl. My MINI came to the US aboard the Takasago this weekend, so I'm not too far off from getting it. Oh well. I did get an e-mail last week about how the bonnet is sculpted, but not the mind meld one...

I got the "Mind Meld" email also. It said that I was receiving it because my dealer(Patrick)requested that it be sent to me. It came at the beginning of July and my MCS is also on the Takasago, with an estimated delivery date of Aug. 1st.

Yes, I think you're the only one...when I asked about daytime running lights, my dealer told me it was a $700 option. I don't think he knew that the lights could be programmed! I signed up ages ago w/MINIUsa and have never received an email from them - except once when I asked a direct question...

Looks like it was up to your dealer; if he participated in the MINIUSA mind meld program, you received the email. If not, you were out of luck...

So, Checkered Flag of VA Beach does not participate. Anyone else?

Apparently Keeler in Albany, NY, doesn't either. I never got an e-mail. I'm going in Friday to have the options programmed that I want, so I'll ask my salesperson if he knows anything about it.

I sent a message to miniusa suggesting that there should be a standard form for programming the car as I am missing features I would have liked set up. I got the response below. Ask your dealer for the form to fill in even if they don't give it to you - it does exist!

I hate to contradict your authorized MINI Dealer and possibly upset you even more, but this customer 'sheet' for the programmable Vehicle Memory Options is already available. Just like it is on BMW, as you describe.

In fact, we request to all authorized MINI Dealers to have this available for customers so they may have these programmable features already programmed at the time of delivery.

I am truly sorry that your authorized MINI Dealer has not made you aware of this sooner. If the sales team at your authorized MINI Dealer still is indicating that this is not available, please have them call us and we will direct them to the product bulletin referring to this topic.
