What changes do production codes R52 and R53 signify?

What do these codes mean? I know that when the MINI was in development it was coded the E50, and then later changed to R50, and I know the new MINI will be the R56--but what about R52 and R53? I thought there was only one facelift? What do these codes mean? When were each type in production?

Should probably clarify that.

The R50 is the MINI hatchback (excluding Cooper S). The R52 is the Convertible. The R53 is the Cooper S.

The R56 is the next generation hatchback (including S) then looking ahead there's an R55 (estate) and R57 (next gen Convertible)...

In addition are model codes which apply to variations on a theme, for example:

Code:
RA31 = One (LHD)
RA32 = One (RHD)
RB11 = Diesel (LHD)
RB12 = Diesel (RHD)
RC31 = Cooper (LHD)
RC32 = Cooper (RHD)
RC33 = Cooper (USA)
RD31 = One Convertible (LHD)
RD32 = One Convertible (RHD)
RE31 = Cooper S (LHD)
RE32 = Cooper S (RHD)
RE33 = Cooper S (USA)
RF31 = Cooper Convertible (LHD)
RF32 = Cooper Convertible (RHD)
RF33 = Cooper Convertible (USA)
RH31 = Cooper S Convertible (LHD)
RH32 = Cooper S Convertible (RHD)
RH33 = Cooper S Convertible (USA)
I've removed posts/banter from this thread as I could see it confusing people.

All convertibles have the R52 designation.

Not where i work they don't...

I'd provide proof but i daresay there is a lot of stuff that shouldn't be shown or discussed on a public forum, but the R54 model code is DEFINITELY used.

Interesting, not seen R54 on any documentation I can remember. I'd provide examples too, but obviously cant for similar reasons!

We only use R50 and R52 as far as I recall. I've not had much to do with it though, except when theres a problem and my car is used as a demo.
