As many of you waiting for a vessel out of Southampton know, a new car park (parking lot) has been under construction by WW to increase their capacity. Well, found this interesting press release on their web site and was able to get the photos from their PR people. At the bottom of the thread I have also added some great pics taken by eBrit showing the terminal in action!

Wallenius Wilhelmsen shipped 23,391 cars in May 2002 - an all time monthly record - through the Port of Southampton just weeks after the opening of its £4 multi-deck car terminal at the port's Eastern Docks.

In addition to the 23,391 cars shipped from the port to Australia, the Far East and the United States, an additional 1,956 cars were shipped by the company from the port's Western Docks, while a further 1,000 cars were shipped out through Liverpool. Wallenius Wilhelmsen also handled 1,800 car imports through Southampton.

Craig Jasienski, managing director, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines UK, said:
"These tremendous car export figures have realised our aspirations for Southampton to become a major centre for car exports in the UK. This much needed new car terminal shows our automotive customers that we have capacity to handle upwards of 357,000 vehicles a year through the port, and we have the infrastructure in place to meet their needs well into the next decade."

The major customers at Southampton for Wallenius Wilhelmsen include Land Rover, MG Rover, Jaguar and Gefco (Peugeot) cars, which are exported to the US, Asia and Australia, while BMW and Ford are imported through the port.
