When will current shape devalue with release of new shape?

Am strongly considering buying an 04 plate cooper s, however I am worried about the prices of them falling in the near future after me buying it, due to the release of the new model.

Just wondering if you guys have noticed/thought the fall has already occured or if not opinions on when/if prices will take a fall.

Just I dont really want to buy a car for about £13500 now if I could wait a bit and save a fair bit of money.

Cheers
Sam

To be honest it's still all a bit of the unknown at the moment.

If the new car is well received by the motoring press (and I imagine it will be very well received based on my experience at the test drives in the Netherlands last week) then it will have more of an effect than if it's not highly rated. However, despite a new engine and heavily revised interior the car looks much of a muchness to the untrained eye, so residuals shouldn't be hit TOO badly.

If I were looking at a second hand purchase like you are though, personally I'd be inclined to wait until after the start of the Paris motorshow in September when the car will be "launched", but then again, if you really want one now, that might be too long to wait! Thing is you could wait forever for the bubble to burst and still time it wrong by a month, and be kicking yourself for waiting!

The longer you wait, the cheaper it will be to a point, just because the car is aging.

as soon as the BMW dealerships start taking orders for New cars, they will artificially push down the value of the old cars by offerring lower trade in deals for them. They will say that the car is being devalued by the arrival of the newer model, therefore creating a sense of the car being devlued simply by them offering less. This is how it works across the board, not just at BMW/Mini. Car saleman will see the new car as an excuse to lower the value of the old car, and buyers/sellers will accept their 'insider knowledge' that this is correct.

This whole situation will then accelerate as current owners look to 'jump ship' from their perfectly fine current car due to the panic of being caught in a car whose percieved value is falling at a greater rate.

Another reason for accelerated depreciation is that the warranty is running out now on thousands of used Minis....

I'm not so sure about that. Looking at the comments about the new MCS R56 it would seem that not all mini lovers, love the new or should I say revised shape. If this negativity flows through to the public in general then it becomes a different ball game. Only time will tell. From a personal point of view I'm glad that I am the owner of a 2006 works Mcs.

I'll be cheesed off if the current Mini de-values considerably. We all know that if you try and haggle with Mini dealers on price, they say no.
Their reason is the Mini holds its price. So if the 1st gen Mini's go down a lot in price and are not worth a bean, then surely they are talking b*llshit.

I'm just waffling, hope that made sense!

Rant over!

I couldn't care a dime if my car devalues because of the new one. Newest isn't always best - and to be honest, I'd much rather have the last of the current generation of MINIs... sans problems, and very solid. Rather than a brand new car which will go through its teething problems, I'd rather wait a few years, enjoy my perfect MINI and then invest in the new style.

Everyone's different - but I won't get caught in the hype.
