Canada Engine cooling fan stays on

A problem with my 03 Cooper S, after a short drive yesterday (saturday) I noticed that the engine fan stayed running after I switched the car off.Thought it was maybe due to the hot weather we have and it would shut down itself.20 minutes in the store and when I returned No still running? Drove home and pulled fuse to stop it.Put fuse back in this morning and the fan started, had not even started the car yet.So fuse is out again off to the dealer next week if I can get an appointment, anyhelp out there, is it common has it happened to you and is it a warranty item??I need to know before they get a chance to rip me off. Otherwise happy with the S only the second problem I have had that is as yet unexplainable.Hope it is a simple fix

Hasn't happened to me, but I've heard of it. I think there's a thread on here about it, but if I remember rightly the most common cause is a stuck fan relay. In very hot weather I've had the fan come on after I shut the engine down but after a few minutes, 5 or 10 at the most, it shuts down. I think it's designed to come on when the engine compartment reaches a certain temp, but it's supposed to shut off again. Hope this helps

I've had the cooling fan stay on when the car was off, thought not for as long a duration as you mentioned. I haven't checked the radiator coolant level (not just the expansion bottle) though I saw this suggested on another thread (look under 'faults & fixes'). I have a 2003 Cooper.

well yo've got a thermostat ; coolant temp sensor of some kind probably; a relay maybe. pull the plug to fan (still running?) no? o.k. pull the relay . etc. till you locate the culprit.

It happened to my 04 mcs once for about a minute when i was about 3 months old but never happened again since then. I had a hard run that day and it was hot sunny day.

I have an '03 Cooper S and on after a two hour drive in 92 degree heat the fan stayed on for the first time ever. I was so surprised that I popped the bonnet to have a look. I thought something was wrong! I can't say how long it stayed on because I was away from the car for the next eight hours...

Last month - when it was very hot over here (compared to usual) - my cooling fan refused to turn off. It ran for over an hour without the engine running and bonnet open, in the end I disconnected the battery, hoping to reset everything. Reconnected it, still running. Disconnected and left over night, everything was back to normal and not had a problem since.
