I once had a guy practically jump into my car as I was about to leave a petrol station. It was when the Mini's had just come out and there were not many on the road. I had just paid and was closing my door when someone grabbed it and popped his head in. He loved the car and was dying to see what the interior was like. It took me about 5 mins to get rid of him.

I had a guy come up to me the other day, first insisting that my car was a Works lookalike... then when he realised it was actually a Cooper S Works, arguing that it must be uninsured or on my parents policy because I couldn't possibly get covered "at my age". What the hell is that all about?!

I've had a few people at petrol stations or supermarkets normally, ask to have a look and ask about waiting lists etc, all very friendly and apologetic for holding me up Have also fielded a Q&A session for an older couple outside home too, almost to the point of giving them a brochure!

I had just bought my car and was driving down the road when the elderly neighbour in the house oposite me stops his car and drops his window. He must be 70+ at least. At first I thought I was just going to get it in the neck for the JCW exhaust on my MCS... Then I noticed his HUGE grin. He was as excited to see it as I was to own it. Telling me how how owned a top spec one for £500 back when the originals were new. He even wanted me to rev it a bit so he could hear how it goes. He did say he was jealous

so i was at my friends house the other night, and across the street is this family that fixes up their bmw's, and they have 2 m3's. anyways it was late at night and i was waiting for my friend to open his door so i could get in, so i peeked back at my mini, just then this m3 is driving in and it stops in the street and i could see the guy look out his window at my mini. he was there a good 7 seconds before he pulled into his garage. how cool did i feel?

It is sometimes possible that some of the people looking are ex-MINI owners. We now have a new 911 4S Cabrio but when I'm driving I still look out for nice looking MINIs. And if I saw one that looked like our old DS/B Works I may even stop for a good look - just in case it was old "Gus". TBH if people stop to look at the 911 I assume they are interested or curious and not jealous / envious. ![]()

I agree with you Andy, most people I speak to are interested because they used to own one or they had a classic mini previously. I would say people are more interested or curious of the MINI rather than jealous. If it made people jealous I would be worried about parking it somewhere without it getting keyed.

I did a bit of a rough parking job once down a side road near Portsmouth high steet. So I was standing there thinking do I need to straighten that up? Just as I was thinking no its fine, some chap about 40 odd said to me "you can park that on my drive if you want". I didn't quite catch what he said, then he said "they are my favourate cars, they are" "Thats beautiful, how can you afford that?" I proceeded to tell him all about it and said he loved it and would have that. I wouldn't say he was jealous just admiring it. The person who scratched my side with a key was jealous!

Incredible but true story. Last Friday night I was on a dual carriageway not far from home when I saw a Lamborghini Murcielago coming up behind me. The guy pulled out to pass me, and he drew alongside and stayed there. The Lambo was LHD on a Swiss registration. He took a good look at the Mini, smiled, pointed at my car and put his thumb up. Then he put his foot down hard and was away. A smell of petroleum prevails throughout.
