My mother gave me some great advice, if you have a distintive plate, people always know where you are

I have taken my plate of my old car but I am still driving it for a bit, its amazing to be anonymous again, people that know me drive past without even a glance

I don't buy into personalised number plates.... on a Rolls or similar, where you would be noted anyway its normal to have a personalised plate, in fact on that type of car a regular "out of the hat" registration will stand out and would be unique. but on most other cars especially tarted up cars its just too much (can I say) chavey... why do you want to be noticed ?

I agree. They're pretentious and usually indicative of vanity on the part of the car owner. Who cares what your initials are? Are they the only distinctive thing about you? I once saw a car where the letters/spacing had been played with so it read "YE5 1M MW". To be honest, I wasn't wondering whether you were MW, or KQ for that matter.

"Normal" personalised plates are bad enough, but the ones with dodgy fonts or non-standard spacing are dreadful (whilst displaying a particularly unappealing type of arrogance and contempt for the law). Someone driving a Rover 214 near where I work has "RO51E H T" as her plate, and every time I see the car, I'm really tempted to report her to the police. Petty, I know, but you can't pick and choose the laws you comply with. If you don't comply with laws relating to registration plates, does that mean I can disregard burglary laws, break into your house and steal all your stuff?

I am for them and I have one. I disagree with people who have them illegally spaced and I also disagree with people using the bolts incorrectly.

My number plate is totally anonymous to people that don't know me - as it doesn't state my initials, but people who know me recognise it and I have had a lot of comments saying they like it.

It is C1 YDN (correctly spaced) my name is C LYDON so I think it works well and I am going to be buying the missus one for her wedding present which will tie in very nicely and match mine some what. She likes the idea so I see nothing wrong with it.

As someone has said here it is just a form of 'modding' I think people with custom exhausts, body kits, spoilers, blacked out windows happen to look like knobs but hey each to their own....

Humans are envious creatures though by nature and any form of displaying that you are doing well or even displaying individuality generally causes a reaction. We are after all MINI owners and some people will slate us for that!

Number plates rule, try getting something you can take to another car tho.

My main one is my name, Shofi, the others were just novelty buys.

And my main plate, which is on retention at the moment.

i like personalized reg plates i think it shows individuality if your plate actually means something or even if you get it for a joke.

im sure you've all heard the saying 'if a guy buys a fast car hes probably got a small knob' well someone near me has 'W33 NOB' just for a laugh..

and a guy i've seen about with a white Audi R8 has 'R8 GTF' (as in get to ****)

so i think they're quite cool, they can also hide the cars age if you don't want people to know you have an old car (daft i know but one of my friends has done it )

i don't agree with cars that have illegal spacing on there reg though.

Personal plates are fine as long as you dont mess with the spacing and/or bolts to make them spell something out...then they just look pathetic.
Also the spacing and format is ther for good reason...you might benefit from it yourself one day!

I've been driving with my plates, which are wrongly spaced etc, for the past 3 years, not once have i got a fine for it. As long as they are readable, police dont really care.

You've a fair chance to get away with them on the front, rears no as PC Plod will see when following and a very good excuse to pull you over Be warned

I'm confused as to how you can get a plate that has illegal spacing. How could you register it if its illegal? Just curious.

Where I live you can get any combination of letters, numbers and spaces upto 7 characters as logn as the slogan is approved. Its tempting to get a personalized one as its only 100$CDN.

If you look at KissMyRs's number plates the Mini would be sold as L8 WBM and the R8's would be R88 LUD so he has therefore changed where they are spaced.
The Police are quite strict on this now and new guidelines were released not long back about even having the plate suppliers name, address and the British standard "BSAU" markings on them.
